    Abstract: Disclosed are non-aqueous electrolyte compositions of the present invention that comprise non-aqueous solvents and monomers such as aniline, phenanthrene, ethylenedioxythiophene, benzothiophene or derivatives thereof. The monomers are contained in the electrolytes of the present invention in the amounts of less than about 5.0 weight percent of the non-aqueous solvent. In the present invention, cyclic carbonates, linear carbonates or mixtures thereof can be used as the non-aqueous solvents. The electrolyte compositions of the present invention improve the safety characteristics of the cell by preventing the flow of large currents resulting from overcharge or feed-through, and also improve cell life characteristic by helping the reversible transfer of lithium ions.
