Patent number: 7535435Abstract: The invention provides a projector a lighting optical system, a micro-lens array, a shutter array, a liquid crystal light valve, a projection optical system, and a modulation control portion. The modulation control portion can control the shutter array and the liquid crystal light valve in response to levels of gray-scale of colors specified by input image signals. When the gray-scale value is 1% or less, time-interval control is effected in such a manner that 1% of light is allowed to pass through by the shutter array, while a fine gray-scale expression is achieved by the liquid crystal light valve. Also, when the gray-scale value is 0%, light is shut out completely by the shutter. When configured in this manner, it is possible to improve the reproducibility at darker levels of gray-scale and the contrast characteristics. Accordingly, the display characteristics of an image from a liquid crystal projector can be improved.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2004Date of Patent: May 19, 2009Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventor: Fumio Koyama

Publication number: 20070236433Abstract: The image display apparatus of the invention applies a tone-based voltage, which corresponds to a tone value of image data at each of multiple pixels on a VA liquid crystal display, to the pixel for display of an image represented by the image data on the VA liquid crystal display. The tone-based voltage of each pixel is restricted, based on a transmittance-voltage characteristic of the pixel that differs by the position of the pixel on the plane of the VA liquid crystal display. This arrangement ensures application of adequate voltages according to the tone values of image data to the VA liquid crystal, thus enhancing the quality of images displayed on the VA liquid crystal display.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2007Publication date: October 11, 2007Applicant: SEIKO EPSON CORPORATIONInventor: Fumio Koyama

Publication number: 20070222728Abstract: In a video signal processing device, a black-white expansion circuit performs black-white expansion of a luminance signal (Y signal) included in a video signal to generate an expanded luminance signal (Y? signal). A luminance ratio ‘n’ is computed as the rate of the expanded luminance signal (Y? signal) to the luminance signal (Y signal). A first color difference signal (U signal) and a second color difference signal (V signal) included in the video signal are respectively multiplied by the luminance ratio ‘n’ (=Y?/Y) to give an expanded first color difference signal (U? signal) and an expanded second color difference signal (V? signal). This arrangement of the invention effectively enables black-white expansion with no color change, while attaining reduction of the overall circuit scale.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2007Publication date: September 27, 2007Applicant: SEIKO EPSON CORPORATIONInventors: Fumio Koyama, Yasuo Yagi

Publication number: 20070216971Abstract: A color correction circuit includes a 3D-LUT, an off data generation circuit, an image signal switchover circuit, and an interpolation operation circuit. The off data generation circuit substitutes respective lower (k?n) bits of input R, G, and B signals R2, G2, and B2 with a value ‘0’ and outputs processed R, G, and B signals after the substitution as off data Or, Og, and Ob. The off data generation circuit accordingly gives the output equivalent to the output of the 3D-LUT on the assumption that the storage of the 3D-LUT is rewritten to have identical input and output. The image signal switchover circuit alternatively selects and outputs standard data Sr, Sg, and Sb input from the 3D-LUT and the off data Or, Og, and Ob input from the off data generation circuit according to the setting of an externally given correction prohibit signal F. The color correction function of the color correction circuit is thus readily activated and inactivated, in response to the correction prohibit signal F.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 27, 2007Publication date: September 20, 2007Applicant: SEIKO EPSON CORPORATIONInventor: Fumio Koyama
