  • Publication number: 20070103439
Abstract: An optical mouse images as an array of pixels the spatial features of generally any micro textured or micro detailed work surface below the mouse. The photo detector responses are digitized and stored as a frame into memory. Motion produces successive frames of translated patterns of pixel information, which are compared by autocorrelation to ascertain the direction and amount of movement. A hold feature suspends the production of movement signals to the computer, allowing the mouse to be physically relocated on the work surface without disturbing the position on the screen of the pointer. This may be needed if the operator runs out of room to physically move the mouse further, but the screen pointer still needs to go further. The hold feature may be implemented with an actual button, a separate proximity detector or by detecting the presence of a characteristic condition in the digitized data, such as loss of correlation or velocity in excess of a selected limit.

  • Publication number: 20060219863
Abstract: Power data is obtained from a power meter that utilizes a rotatable element (e.g., a disk) by illuminating a spot on the rotatable element, capturing image information from the surface of the rotatable element, processing the image information to track movement of the rotatable element, and converting the movement information to digital power data. Movement of the rotatable element is tracked by capturing successive frames of image information and correlating common features in the image frames to determine the magnitude of movement of the common features.

  • Publication number: 20060154712
Abstract: Systems and methods for associating a wireless device to a host. The wireless device is associated to the host via a binding and discovery process. The binding process establishes the association. A unique identifier and other binding information is provided to the wireless device, which is stored in the wireless device to establish the link to the console. The binding information is retained in the wireless device. The discovery process enables the wireless device to join a session at hosted by the host. The host sends broadcast packets that are compared to the stored information in the wireless device. The broadcast packets are validated and authenticated to complete the discovery process. A visual indicator on the host and/or controller may indicate the success or failure of either the binding or discovery process.

  • Publication number: 20060139332
Abstract: A hand operated pointing device for use with a computer includes a movable housing, a source of non-coherent light illuminating a work surface and circuitry in the movable housing using arrays of data related to light reflected by the illuminated work surface to produce values by processing portions of a first array with portions of a second array. One of the values may be identified to represent movement of the housing relative to the work surface. The light may illuminate surface irregularities at an angle of incidence low enough to produce suitable arrays of data for processing from highlights and shadows of the illuminated surface irregularities. The circuitry may produce additional values by processing another selected portion of the first array with portions of a third array or may select a fourth array for processing with the third array. Predictions may be derived from the values. Signal may be sent to a computer related to movement of the housing.

  • Publication number: 20060076745
Abstract: A robotic camera dolly has a column and a base. The base is both driven and steered through the use of two drive wheels. The drive wheels are driven at equal peripheral velocities to move the dolly in a straight line, and at different peripheral velocities to steer the dolly. The base of the dolly rotates during steering. However, a maintaining mechanism maintains the pointing direction of a camera mount despite the rotation of the base. Optionally, the camera dolly additionally has a suspension that couples two caster wheels to its base in a manner that provides a greater compliance with respect to common motion of the caster wheels than with respect to differential motion of the caster wheels. The suspension gives the dolly the rigid stance of a suspension having four points of support, with the stability of a suspension having only three points of support.

  • Publication number: 20050221896
Abstract: A game controller operates in a wireless mode and is previously bound to a game console. To reestablish a wireless communication connection between the game controller and game console, the game console transmits its unique console identification that the game controller compares to a previously stored console identifier. The game controller in turn sends its unique controller identifier to the game console which compares it to a previously stored controller identifier. An adaptive frequency hopping technique is used to eliminate bad channels in a predetermined frequency hopping sequence.

  • Publication number: 20050212685
Abstract: A remote control for the visually impaired provides improved control over televisions and other appliances. The remote control has an input module, which may be a keypad, for receiving user inputs. The remote control further has a wireless transmitter module for sending control signals to an appliance being controlled. The remote control further has a speech module for uttering speech signals indicative of the user input. In an optional learning mode, the remote control only utters commands as they are entered, and does not transmit the commands. In another optional mode, the remote control only transmits control signals, and does not utter the corresponding speech signals. By the remote control providing both training and also feedback, blind users become better able to operate their complicated appliances independently, with fewer mistakes, and with less intervention.
