  • Publication number: 20080236267
Abstract: A method and a device for monitoring the intake manifold pressure of an internal combustion engine in which a measured signal for the intake manifold pressure is compared with a reference signal for the intake manifold pressure. For a deviation of the measured signal for the intake manifold pressure from the reference signal for the intake manifold pressure, a tolerance range is predefined for error-free operation of the intake and/or exhaust valves of at least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine. A check is made whether the measured signal for the intake manifold pressure deviates from the reference signal for the intake manifold pressure by more than a predefined tolerance range. In this case an erroneous operation of the intake and/or exhaust valves is detected; otherwise an error-free operation of the intake and/or exhaust valves is detected.

  • Publication number: 20080208430
Abstract: A method and a device as well as a computer program for controlling an internal combustion engine are provided, a torque model being used within the framework of calculating instantaneous variables and/or actuating variables. A correction of a basic value determined under standard conditions takes place in the process. In addition, to further improve the accuracy of the model, the efficiency for the conversion of the chemical into mechanical energy by which the optimum torque value is corrected, is determined at least as a function of a variable characterizing the combustion center point and a variable characterizing the opening instant of a discharge-side gas-exchange valve.

  • Patent number: 7381149
Abstract: A method and a device for operating a drive unit provide a switch between half-engine operation and full-engine operation. A switch takes place between two operating states of a first component of the drive unit as a function of a first performance quantity of the drive unit. A switch takes place between two operating states of a second component of the drive unit as a function of a second performance quantity of the drive unit. A check is performed whether switching between two operating states of the second component results in a shift of the first performance quantity over a switching threshold for switching between two operating states of the first component, and if so, the switch between the two operating states of second component is delayed until a switch between the two operating states of first component has occurred.

  • Publication number: 20080120012
Abstract: A method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinder banks which allow a simple diagnosis of a faulty deactivation of the gas exchange of at least one cylinder bank, or a simple determination of the ambient pressure. In the process, in addition to at least one first cylinder bank having activated gas exchange of at least one cylinder, a deactivation of the gas exchange of all cylinders of at least one second cylinder bank is initiated in at least one operating state of the internal combustion engine. The at least one second cylinder bank is assigned a separate intake tract. In the at least one operating state, a variable that is characteristic for the pressure in the intake tract of the at least one second cylinder bank is measured and evaluated for the presence of undesired pressure pulsations.

  • Publication number: 20080027623
Abstract: In order to achieve at least a short-term reduction of the torque of an internal combustion engine (2), which comprises a range as widely adjustable as possible, causes a slight as possible thermal stress on the components of the attached exhaust gas system (5) and allows for a reduction of the fuel consumption, it is proposed that in addition to the cut off of the fuel-delivery control phase of a cylinder (4), an intake valve (17) associated with the cylinder is cut off.

  • Patent number: 7257813
Abstract: A control unit for a system and a method of operating a control unit have modules that are activated. Before activation of a certain module, inquiries are made to detect cross-dependencies with other modules that have already been activated. To do so, a first storage device and a second storage device containing this information are provided. A scheduler prevents modules which interfere with one another from being activated simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 7077084
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes at least one inlet valve whose operation can be described at least by the parameters: opening angle, closing angle, valve stroke curve (H1, H2) and phase position (pn) of the valve stroke curves (H1, H2). At least one of the parameters (pn) can be continuously shifted and at least one other parameter (H1, H2) can be switched stepwise. In order to avoid jumps of the torque generated by the engine when switching over, it is suggested that, in advance of a switchover (74) of the step-wise switchable parameter (H1, H2), the continuously shiftable parameter (pn) is so adjusted (72) that, with the switchover (74) of the stepwise switchable parameter (H1, H2), at least one condition variable (rl) of the combustion of a combustion chamber assigned to the inlet valve is not changed or not significantly changed.

  • Patent number: 7051710
Abstract: A method, a device and a computer program for controlling an internal combustion engine, in which a torque model is used within the framework of calculating instantaneous variables and/or actuating variables. In doing so, a basic value ascertained under standard conditions is corrected as a function of the inert-gas rate and/or the valve-overlap angle. Moreover, to further improve the accuracy of the model, the efficiency for the conversion of the chemical energy into mechanical energy by which the optimum torque value is corrected, is determined as a function of the deviation between optimum ignition angle and an instantaneous ignition angle as well as an additional variable representing the combustion performance of the mixture. The latter is the optimum ignition angle.

  • Patent number: 6983737
Abstract: An internal combustion engine (10) is operated in dependence upon operating characteristic variables such as rpm (nmot) of a crankshaft (18), temperature (Tmot) of the internal combustion engine (10) and/or temperature of the intake air (Taev). In the method, a temperature (Taevk) of the inducted air in the combustion chamber (16) is, at least in approximation, obtained from a detected or modeled temperature (Taev) of the inducted air in a region remote from the combustion chamber.
