  • Patent number: 5641187
Abstract: An electromagnetic shear lock comprising an electromagnet assembly which is mounted to a door frame and an armature assembly which is mounted to a door, the electromagnet assembly and armature assembly defining a gap. The armature assembly includes an armature mounted on a leaf spring. The electromagnet assembly includes an electromagnet which is mounted to a mounting plate. A pair of springs which engage opposite end portions of the mounting plate bias the mounting plate and electromagnet away from the armature. When the electromagnet is energized and the electromagnet and armature are attracted to each other, the mounting plate slides longitudinally along the guide member against the force of the springs and the electromagnet is displaced to close the gap.

  • Patent number: 5611582
Abstract: An impact resistant armature has an armature plate defining a stepped bore therethrough. The stepped bore defines a shoulder. A mounting assembly having an expanded head portion and a reduced shank portion is positioned in the bore, with the shank portion anchored to the vertical face of a door. The mounting assembly supports the armature assembly in a first position wherein the head portion and the shoulder define an initial gap. Upon impact by an intense force, the armature plate is movable to a second position wherein the head portion and the shoulder engage while the armature retains a bonded relationship with the electromagnet.

  • Patent number: 5608298
Abstract: An electronic lock assembly mounts to the opposite sides of a door to provide an electronically operable level of security. An electronic reader generates a signal which is employed to control the operation of a conventional latch installation. A card reader, key pad or contact activatable data port generates a signal to actuate a motor to disengage a locking dog to thereby allow rotation of the latch handle. The motor shaft is connected to a drive screw by a coil spring to permit proper operation if a jamming condition is present. A privacy switch may be operated by an occupant of the room to block actuation of the motor, thereby denying entry to the room. A permanent magnet mounted in the door frame activates a reed switch on opening of the door, disabling the privacy switch and preventing inadvertent disablement of the electronic lock when the room is not occupied.

  • Patent number: 5537103
Abstract: Programmers for an entry control system, which operates to automatically control access to an area upon contact of an electronic key with a data port, employ data carriers housing ROM chips. The chips have a unique data code which corresponds to an elemental key or a code. In one form of the programmer, a membrane keypad addresses the ROM chips for inputting commands to program a controller. In other embodiments, the programming chips are mounted to a flexible board and are positionable to directly contact a receptacle port for the controller.

  • Patent number: 5516166
Abstract: An electromagnetic lock employs a pre-wound bobbin which is forced onto the E-shaped lamination stack of a magnetic core. The housing is configured in two longitudinal sections which are relatively pivotal to provide access for circuitry within the housing for both an outswinging and an inswinging door lock installation. The electromagnet also employs a circuit to sense the power supply to the electromagnet and to automatically select the operating voltage of the electrical coil.

  • Patent number: 5517176
Abstract: An exit bar has an elongated body for mounting on an exit door. The exit bar incorporates a pair of independent sensors. An infrared beam is generated along the front of the bar. An infrared detector produces a first signal when the beam is interrupted. The first signal results in release of a lock securing the door. If the beam is interrupted for longer than a pre-set time limit, a first alarm sounds. A capacitance sensor produces a second signal when the sensor detects changes of capacitance in the bar as a result of contact or near contact with foreign objects. The second signal also results in release of the lock securing the door. If the capacitance sensor detects a capacitance change for longer than a pre-set time limit, a second alarm sounds.

  • Patent number: 5496079
Abstract: A security system, responsive to a threshold force applied to a door, has a lock frame adapted for mounting to a door frame. A housing having an electromagnet mounted thereto swingably mounts to the lock frame. An armature, attractable to the electromagnet, mounts to the door. The housing swings on an axis substantially perpendicular to the door frame header. A pin fixed to the housing extends into the lock frame to limit the swinging of the housing between a first maximum and a second maximum position. A spring disposed between the housing and the lock frame urges the housing toward the first maximum position and sets a threshold force. A microswitch generates a signal upon swinging of the housing relative to the frame when the force of the spring is overcome by a force applied to the door.

  • Patent number: 5065136
Abstract: An exit door security system which employs an electromagnet and armature to lock an exit door comprises an electromagnetic housing and a frame assembly. The housing is pivotally mounted to the frame assembly. An attempt to exit the door causes the housing to pivot to thereby actuate a switch. The lock is automatically released after a pre-established time delay. An alarm at the door may also be actuated by the switch. The electronic circuitry is configured to allow for immediate authorized egress and to implement an immediate safety release of the lock. The lock may be operated in either a normally locked or normally unlocked mode.

  • Patent number: 4981312
Abstract: An electromagnetic shear lock comprising an electromagnet having an E-shaped cross section with a coil positioned about the middle leg of the E is mounted to a doorway and an armature is mounted to the door, where in one form the middle leg of the E is shortened to define a recess to receive an elongated armature member and provide mechanical reinforcement against shearing when the electromagnet is energized. The armature is constructed of at least two telescoping members where the outer armature member is U-shaped with legs which contact the outer legs of the electromagnet and the inner member is attracted into the defined recess and will engage the inner surfaces of the outer legs of the electromagnet. Even if the outer member is pryed down from the electromagnet, at least the inner armature members will still be in a magnetic circuit with the inner electromagnet armature member in the defined recess and providing mechanical reinforcement in engaging the inner surfaces of the outer legs.

  • Patent number: 4783882
Abstract: A door closer assembly for connection between door and frame members relatively movable between open and closed positions includes a housing having a power screw rotatably mounted therewithin. A follower is mounted on the screw and moves axially along the screw when the screw is rotated. A spring is disposed in the chamber and is compressed by the follower. A handle member is mounted for rotation about a first end of the housing and is connected to the screw for rotation therewith. An indicating member is mounted on the housing for axial movement relative thereto. The indicating member is in engagement with the handle whereby rotation of the handle results in simultaneous axial movement of the follower and the indicator member. The indicator member includes visually observable means for indicating the relative degree of compression of the spring.
