  • Publication number: 20100235025
Abstract: A system for optimizing energy storage component usage in a vehicle comprising one of a hybrid vehicle and an electric vehicle, the vehicle comprising a computer programmed to identify if a vehicle position is associated with link data in a database of historical power usage data, the link data comprising measured historical power usage data for a link of vehicle travel. If the vehicle position is associated with the link data, the computer is programmed to obtain the link data of the link from the database, the link data absent terrain information from the database. The computer is also programmed to determine an expected vehicle power usage of the vehicle based on the obtained link data and optimize the energy storage component usage based on the expected vehicle power usage and based on efficiency and life cycle costs of an energy storage component of the vehicle if the vehicle position is associated with the link data.

  • Patent number: 7605924
Abstract: An inspection system is provided to examine internal structures of a target material. This inspection system combines an ultrasonic inspection system and a thermographic inspection system. The thermographic inspection system is attached to ultrasonic inspection and modified to enable thermographic inspection of target materials at distances compatible with laser ultrasonic inspection. Quantitative information is obtained using depth infrared (IR) imaging on the target material. The IR imaging and laser-ultrasound results are combined and projected on a 3D projection of complex shape composites. The thermographic results complement the laser-ultrasound results and yield information about the target material's internal structure that is more complete and more reliable, especially when the target materials are thin composite parts.

  • Patent number: 7155075
Abstract: Several methods for measuring and monitoring temperature have been presented for systems requiring temperature monitoring. In one implementation, the system has been applied to battery assemblies. Temperature measurements for every part of the battery assembly are disclosed. In one aspect the surface temperature of a battery assembly is measured. In another aspect, the internal temperature of the battery assembly is measured. In other aspects, the internal and external temperatures of several battery assemblies are measured. Based on the measured temperature, control signals are generated by a control system to switch down the power of the battery charging system so as to prevent excess heat generation.

  • Patent number: 7078877
Abstract: A method for equalizing a storage parameter for a vehicle energy storage system having one or more energy storage banks associated therewith includes identifying a quiescent period of operation for the vehicle, and determining whether the value of a defined storage quantity for a first energy storage bank differs from the value of the defined storage quantity for a second energy storage bank by a threshold amount. During the quiescent period of operation, one of the first and second energy storage banks is discharged and the other of the first and second energy storage banks is charged. The one of the first and second energy storage banks corresponds to the bank having the value of the defined storage quantity exceeding the value of the defined storage quantity of the other of the first and second energy storage banks.
