  • Publication number: 20020191313
Abstract: Embodiments of systems, methods and article of manufacture provide for readback signal detection and analysis. One embodiment provides an in-situ system to detect envelope traces of a readback signal. Using the envelope data, the presence of undesirable activity and/or storage medium surface conditions may be determined. For example, head modulation may be determined. Upon detection of a modulation event in a sector or a track, the compromised data may be recovered using a signal processing system. Another embodiment provides for detection of a thermal signal component in a readback signal. The thermal signal is processed for surface information indicative of the surface condition. Information indicating a defect may then be used to avoid storage areas having the defects.

  • Publication number: 20020191325
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for enhanced performance in the presence of stationary position error signal (PES) outliers in a direct access storage device (DASD). A plurality of PES samples are obtained from a plurality of servo sectors around a track. Utilizing the PES samples, a normalized outlier value is computed for each of the plurality of servo sectors around the track. The computed normalized outlier values are sequentially stored and compared with a set threshold value. A stationary PES outlier is identified responsive to each stored outlier value being greater than the set threshold value. Each identified stationary PES outlier is utilized during predefined operations of the DASD. During a recalibration mode of the DASD, a different track for feedforward generation is selected to avoid an identified stationary PES outlier.

  • Publication number: 20020171966
Abstract: A disk drive includes at least one disk having a disk surface and at least one transducer head for writing and/or reading data from the disk surface. The disk drive performs a power-saving idle operation including reducing a rotational speed of the disk, and continuously moving the transducer head at varying radial velocity components relative to the disk surface in a repeating sweeping pattern between a selected inner disk diameter and a selected outer disk diameter. The radial velocity components are varied as a function of the transducer head's radial position in relation to the disk surface, such as with a radial velocity idle sweep profile representing a relationship between the radial velocity component of the transducer head and its radial location relative to the disk surface that optimizes head-disk interaction (HDI) when the disk is rotating at a given reduced rotational speed.

  • Publication number: 20020167745
Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating the flyheight of an airbearing slider in a storage device using variable spindle velocity. The slider floats on an airbearing over a rotating storage disk. The storage disk includes a washboard-sequence having washboard-sections each comprising surface profile variations having a different pitch. The pitches are selected from within a range of values likely to excite an airbearing resonance of the slider as the storage disk rotates at a plurality of discrete velocities. For each of the washboard-sections and at each of the velocities, a maximum amplitude of flyheight modulation of the slider resulting from the slider floating over that washboard-section is measured as the storage disk rotates at that velocity. A determination is made of the velocity/washboard-section combination that caused the largest measured flyheight modulation.

The storage disk includes a washboard-sequence having washboard-sections each comprising surface profile variations having a different pitch. The pitches are selected from within a range of values likely to excite an airbearing resonance of the slider as the storage disk rotates at a rated storage disk velocity. For each of the washboard-sections, a maximum amplitude of flyheight modulation of the slider resulting from the slider floating over that washboard-section is measured. A determination is made of which washboard-section caused the largest measured flyheight modulation. The washboard-section having a pitch that provides an excitation frequency (when the disk is rotated at the rated storage disk velocity) that is closest to the actual airbearing resonance frequency of the slider will produce the largest flyheight modulation.

  • Publication number: 20020141090
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for determining the tribology for a head/disk interface in a direct access storage device (DASD). A readback signal is obtained from a predetermined cylinder. The readback signal is sampled to provide a readback sampled sequence. The readback sampled sequence is summed to store a sum for each data sector of a plurality of data sectors in said predetermined cylinder. Predetermined discrete Fourier transform (DFT) magnitude components are calculated for the data sector sums. A harmonic ratio is calculated utilizing the calculated predetermined DFT magnitude components. The calculated harmonic ratio is compared with a predefined threshold value to identify the tribology for a head/disk interface.

  • Publication number: 20020131186
Abstract: A storage disk having surface profile variations patterned to reduce airbearing modulation of a head slider body in a storage device. The storage disk has a plurality of tracks each having an inner diameter (ID) edge and an outer diameter (OD) edge. The ID edge and the OD edge each comprise surface profile variations having a temporal frequency at a rated storage disk velocity. The surface profile variations of the ID edge of a first one of the tracks have at least one differing pattern parameter relative to the surface profile variations of the OD edge of the first track and/or the ID edge of a second one of the tracks adjacent to the first track, to thereby reduce slider airbearing modulation caused by the surface profile variations as the storage disk rotates. The differing pattern parameter may be circumferential skew, depth, period and/or shape.

  • Publication number: 20020101680
Abstract: A method and apparatus for positioning a transducer relative to a storage medium in a storage device. The storage medium is moved relative to the transducer by a motor at a rated storage medium velocity. The storage medium has a plurality of tracks, each having a first edge and a second edge. The first edge and the second edge respectively comprise surface profile variations having a temporal frequency at the rated storage medium velocity. The surface profile variations of the first and second edges are phase modulated, i.e., have a phase difference relative to one another. First and second responses, e.g., thermal responses, are respectively induced in the transducer by the phase modulated surface profile variations of the first and second edges. The transducer may be positioned by a controller, for example, based on at least one of the first and second thermal responses. A storage medium having phase modulated surface profile variations is relatively easy to fabricate.

  • Patent number: 6417982
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying and filtering a resonance frequency of a support structure supporting a read/write head in proximity with a data storage medium involves obtaining a particular sample of a position error signal (PES) frequency transform, preferably using Goertzel's algorithm. The velocity of the data storage medium is varied, and the magnitude of a particular PES frequency transform sample is computed at each of the velocities. A resonance frequency of the support structure is calculated using the velocity associated with the particular sample having a maximum magnitude. The effects of one or more resonance frequencies associated with a read/write head suspension may be canceled in a position error signal using one or more programmable filters provided in each servo loop. A processor programs the filters using the calculated resonance frequencies and adjusts to compensate for the additional lag introduced into the respective servo loops by the selected programmable filters.

  • Patent number: 6415238
Abstract: An apparatus and method for estimating one or more pole frequencies of an amplifier circuit, such as a readback signal amplifier circuit implemented in an arm electronics module of a data storage system, are disclosed. A bias signal that biases the read transducer is modulated at first and second modulation frequencies while a readback signal is obtained from a data storage medium using the read transducer. The readback signal is communicated to the amplifier, and an output signal of the amplifier circuit is measured at the respective first and second modulation frequencies. The amplifier pole frequency is determined by computing a square impedance measurement ratio using square magnitudes of the bias signal and the amplifier output signal respectively measured at the first and second modulation frequencies.

  • Patent number: 6407874
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for detection of the presence of slider airbearing resonance using surface analysis test (SAT) primary defect list (P-list) data. The P-list in the disk drive is selected. Checking for a cluster threshold of adjacent tracks within a sector to identify a SAT cluster is performed. Responsive to identifying the SAT cluster, checking for multiple defects on some tracks within the SAT cluster is performed. Responsive to identifying multiple defects on some tracks within the SAT cluster, the SAT cluster is converted to a binary matrix map. A histogram is generated for the binary matrix map. The harmonic magnitude content of the histogram from harmonics centered about a predetermined slider airbearing resonance frequency is identified.

  • Patent number: 6392841
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing a readback signal obtained from a storage medium using a magnetoresistive (MR) element restores a thermal signal component of the signal. A readback signal obtained from the storage medium comprises a thermal component representing a thermal response of the MR element, and may further comprise a magnetic component representing servo or user data. The readback signal is filtered so as to degrade the thermal component of the signal, typically by amplification circuitry exhibiting a highpass filtering behavior. The highpass filtered readback signal is further filtered using a lowpass filter. The filtered signal is sampled, and a sliding window comprising a series of binary values is applied to groups of the signal samples to produce a plurality of signal sample values for each of the signal sample groups.

  • Patent number: 6385000
Abstract: An apparatus and method for extending the service life of an MR element incorporated in a read/write head involves detecting periods of disk drive system inactivity and selectively switching between the heads for purposes of reading servo information during the inactive periods. Switching between heads may involve selecting each of the heads for reading servo information during one or more periods of disk drive system inactivity or selecting each of the heads in sequence during a respective period of system inactivity. Selecting between heads may also involve selecting a head having a minimum of usage, such as a head having an MR element with a minimum of cumulative operational time or energy dissipation relative to other MR elements provided in the disk drive system. Selecting between heads may further include selectively activating each of the heads for reading servo information for a predetermined duration of time during one or more periods of system idleness.

  • Patent number: 6314377
Abstract: A method and system for strategically arranging drive assemblies within a multiple drive array that includes multiple drive locations. First, a vibration classification is assigned to each drive location among a plurality of drive locations within a multiple drive array, each vibration classification corresponding to a range of measurable vibration levels acceptable at each of the plurality of drive locations. Next, an inherent measurable vibration level of a selected drive assembly that will be installed within one of the drive locations is determined. Finally, the inherent measurable vibration level of the selected drive assembly is correlated with a preferred vibration classification of a particular drive location, such that the selected drive assembly may be optimally located within said multiple drive array.
