The mobile device automatically detects whether an accessory port is engaged with an accessory, such as a headset, for example. In response to at least one change in an indication of the detection, the device automatically performs a sequence of operations. According to one particular embodiment, alarm sequence of operations can include a transmission of an alarm notification to a predefined recipient, for example.

Abstract: A client playback architecture for a media content distribution system is provided. In the preferred embodiment, the client playback architecture is a Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) based architecture. The RDMA based architecture enables the client playback device to obtain media content from a central server in real-time or in substantially real-time as the media content is needed for playback at the client playback device. More specifically, the playback device includes RDMA enabled playback circuitry operating to perform RDMA transfers for select media content, buffer the media content received as a result of the RDMA transfers, and provide the media content for presentation to one or more associated viewers via one or more audio/video interfaces.

Abstract: A content management system for managing content stored by a number of networked Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) associated with a user community is provided. More specifically, the storage space of each of the personal video recorders is physically or logically partitioned into a personal space and a community space. The content management system manages the community spaces of the PVRs such that content relevant to the user community is stored in the collective community space of the PVRs and available to the user community.

Abstract: Mechanisms for providing data streams are disclosed. A device accesses a mapping stored at the device that maps a desired media content item to a source address and to a range of addresses in a storage device of a remote content distribution server allocated to the desired media content item. The device preforms a direct memory-to-memory transfer of the desired media content item from the remote content distribution server to a local memory of the device using the range of addresses. The device encapsulates the desired media content item from the local memory into a plurality of packets according to a streaming protocol. Encapsulating the desired media content item includes inserting into each of the plurality of packets the source address. The plurality of packets are streamed.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for searching social networks. A device is encountered that sends a query. The query comprises a search packet. A content search is performed according to a query parameter described by the search packet. The content search is then repeatedly performed according to a duration parameter described by the search packet.

Abstract: A light-pulse atomic interferometry (LPAI) apparatus is provided. The LPAI apparatus comprises a vessel, two sets of magnetic coils configured to magnetically confine an atomic vapor in two respective magneto-optical traps (MOTs) within the vessel when activated, and an optical system configured to irradiate the atomic vapor within the vessel with laser radiation that, when suitably tuned, can launch atoms previously confined in each of the MOTs toward the other MOT. In embodiments, the magnetic coils are configured to produce a magnetic field that is non-zero at the midpoint between the traps. In embodiments, the time-of-flight of the launched atoms from one MOT to the other is 12 ms or less. In embodiments, the MOTs are situated approximately 36 mm apart. In embodiments, the apparatus is configured to activate the magnetic coils according to a particular temporal magnetic field gradient profile.

Abstract: A system and method for improved dispensing for protective eyewear components, including frames, lenses and assembled protective eyewear glasses, is described. A housing stores and dispenses the eyewear components through an opening. In an embodiment, the eyewear components may be detachably connected together, such as via perforations, and/or may be coiled in a roll or stacked in serpentine configuration within the housing. Also, in one embodiment, a lever or other mechanism may be coupled to the housing to provide advantageous operations of the dispenser, including assembling and/or dispensing the eyewear components. Accordingly, the system and method provides advantages in that rapid and hygienic dispensing of protective eyewear components may be provided.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for enabling information sharing in a distributed virtual world. In general, a virtual world client associated with a user participating in a virtual world operates to obtain one or more annotations associated with virtual world constructs identified as being of interest to the user. The virtual world constructs of interest to the user may be identified by the user or identified automatically by the virtual world client. In one embodiment, the one or more annotations are defined by other users participating in the virtual world. Once the one or more annotations are obtained, the virtual world client may, for example, present the one or more annotations to the user, present a portion of the one or more annotations to the user, notify the user that the one or more annotations are available, or the like.

Abstract: A system and method for providing personal broadcast channels are provided. In one embodiment, one or more users interact with a local broadcast agent hosted by a local server to define profiles for a number of personal broadcast channels. The profiles include information identifying types of content to be broadcast on the personal broadcast channels and optionally formats for the personal broadcast channels. Based on the profiles for the personal broadcast channels, the local broadcast agent generates a request for content types desired for the personal broadcast channels and provides the request to a content distribution agent hosted by a master server. Based on content provided to the local server in response to the request and the profiles of the personal broadcast channels, the local broadcast agent generates the local broadcast channels.

Abstract: A system and method of authenticating a calling party to a remote service, including receiving a request via a communications network to approve a future call to the remote service using a calling identifier associated with the calling party, recording an approval of the future call subject to the future call being made within a predetermined period of time, the remote service receiving a call at a point in time using a calling identifier, determining if a call at that point in time using the received calling identifier is recorded as approved by the authentication system, and, if so, the remote service accepting the call and using the approval of the authentication system to authenticate the calling party.

Abstract: Techniques for improving scrolling performance in a web-based data grid. In one set of embodiments, when a user scrolls through a data grid rendered in a viewport of the user's web browser, client-side code executing in the web browser can detect whether a scroll event has occurred that requires a portion of the viewport to be filled/refreshed with data from a server. The client-side code can further determine whether the scroll event is a short scroll or a long scroll, and can send a request to the server that indicates the type of scroll event. If the scroll event is a short scroll, the server can determine a first amount of data to fetch based on one or more first parameters. If the scroll event is a long scroll, the server can determine a second amount of data to fetch based on one or more second parameters.

Scroll boundaries are set for each pair of adjacent data panes, such that each data pane may only scroll through a portion of the data on its side of the scroll boundary. Data panes may be scrolled independently in the direction of a split. Data panes may be scrolled together perpendicular to the direction of a split.

Abstract: A dynamic query response scheme for a distributed network is provided. In one embodiment, the distributed network is a peer-to-peer (P2P) network including a number of peer nodes. In general, peer nodes delay their query responses, address their query responses, or both delay and address their query responses dynamically to avoid feedback implosion. Abstract: Systems and methods that facilitate extraction and analysis of patient encounters from one or more healthcare related information systems are provided. In an aspect, a system includes a reception component configured to receive information from a plurality of sources regarding courses of care of a plurality of patients, including information identifying activities associated with the courses of care, timing of the activities, resources associated with the activities, and caregiver personal associated with the activities. The system further includes an indexing component configured to generate an index that relates aspects of the information, a filter component configured to employ the index to identify a subset of the information related to a subset of the courses of care for patients associated with a similar medical condition, and an analysis component configured to compare aspects of the subset of the information to identify variance in the subset of the courses of care.

Abstract: Aspects of the invention include methods of generating models for scoring patient notes. The methods include receiving a sample of patient notes, extracting a plurality of ngrams from the sample of patient notes, clustering the plurality of extracted ngrams that meet a similarity threshold into a plurality of lists, identifying a feature associated with each of the plurality of lists based on the ngrams in that list and designating at least one ngram in each list as evidence of the feature associated with that list. The identified features and designated ngram are stored in models for scoring patient notes.
