  • Patent number: 7567538
Abstract: Mobile-to-mobile connections are being arranged in a wireless telecommunications system comprising at least one mobile station, base stations serving the mobile stations, and at least one gateway. The gateway controls the base stations connected to the gateway and performs a protocol conversion. For mobile-to-mobile connections, a second handover algorithm is stored in the gateway. The data transmitted between two mobile stations served by base stations connected to the same gateway is switched in the gateway without a protocol conversion. If a mobile station is engaged in a data transfer connection with another mobile station visiting the wireless telecommunications system, the mobile station is handed over, when necessary, to a base station proposed by a second handover algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20070202802
Abstract: The invention relates to mobile communication systems using wireless network cells inside a vehicle, such as an aircraft, other airborne vessel, ship or train while aboard, and using satellite communications between the cells inside the vehicle and the terrestrial communication system. According to the invention there is an emulator functionality provided at both ends of the satellite communication link. The emulator is capable of providing required state signalling without a connection between the base station and the base station controller, and therefore the satellite communication link can be switched to off state when it is not needed for transferring calls or other information. The invention also provides a possibility to use alternative satellite connections depending on the location of the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20050026608
Abstract: The present invention provides an operational mode of communication which adjusts a transmitting power of a cellular system and a mobile terminal used inside a vehicle, such as an aircraft, so that the mobile terminals (102) inside the aircraft camp on the indoor cellular network (100) inside the aircraft and do not interfere with external cellular networks. This reduces possible electromagnetic interference with avionics inside the aircraft, because the transmitted power levels is limited. The frequency band used by the indoor cellular network can be determined by the service provider independent of frequency bands allocated by communication specifications and regulations. Conventional mobile terminals (102) and conventional base transceiver stations (104) applying the aircraft profile according to the invention can be used inside the aircraft while aboard to communicate with the conventional external cellular networks (150).

  • Patent number: 6748000
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for compensating for variable delays in the communication of packet data to a receiving station during, for example, a VOIP (Voice-Over-Internet Protocol) communication session. Compensation is made for surges of data received at the receiving station subsequent to a congestion condition. A jitter buffer and a trimming buffer are both utilized to buffer data packets thereat. The data buffered at the trimming buffer is selectably trimmed in a manner to permit the informational content of the data received at the receiving station to be recovered without introducing significant delay times in the recovery of the informational content.
