  • Publication number: 20110149333
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for selecting a paper source for image printing are provided. A user accesses a service available from a print server for printing an image. The print server may download the image from a storage server over a network. The print server automatically identifies a list of paper sizes corresponding with a list of available paper sources, and selects a scaling ratio for fitting the image into one of the paper sizes. The print server generates a scaled image based on the selected scaling ratio and sends the scaled image to a printer for the scaled to be printed from a selected paper source.

  • Publication number: 20110093366
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for flexible management of applications provided by one or more application service providers and accessible to one or more client devices such as multi-function devices (e.g., MFPs). A management system registers new applications by recording in a database application information provided by the application service provider. Client devices may then request a menu of all available applications and may subscribe to one or more provided applications by interaction with the management system by transmitting subscription information to the management system. The management system then receives usage information from the service provider for usage of a subscribed application by the client device. The management system records the usage information and may produce reports upon request from the recorded usage information.

  • Publication number: 20110046909
Abstract: A system and method for calculating an observational error of a coordinate measuring machine includes receiving measuring parameters input by a user, obtaining observational errors of the ruler from a storage system, and identifying the zero mark of the ruler. A direction of the ruler is adjusted to be substantially parallel to the measuring direction of the measuring parameters, controlling the coordinate measuring machine to measure the ruler according to the measuring parameters, obtaining measured data. Observational error of the coordinate measuring machine is calculated according to the measured data, which is stored in the storage system.

  • Publication number: 20110010655
Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention a user can rapidly enter and search for data, such as text, using a data entry system by entering one or more characters on a digital keyboard with a pointing device. With the digital keyboard the user can create words, phrases and other character sequences. As the user enters a character sequence, a mechanism for character prediction visually informs the user of which set of characters on the digital keyboard are most likely to have the character that the user wishes to next enter as part of the text. In another aspect of the present invention, as the user forms a character sequence (partial text entry), the character sequence is used to search a dictionary for a set of completion candidates that begin with the character sequence. The data entry system retrieves completion candidates from the dictionary by determining which completion candidates in the dictionary are more likely to be the ones that the user is attempting to type.

  • Publication number: 20100325716
Abstract: A method and apparatus for accessing a document-processing device is provided. A request to access the document-processing device is received by the document-processing device. For example, the request may be a request to configure the document-processing device or a request to produce an electronic copy of a document. The document-processing device reads authentication data from an authentication token, which is a portable physical object associated with the user that issued the request. For example, the authentication token may be a proximity card, a common access card (CAC), a smart card, a credit card, a driver's license, or a cell phone. The document-processing device determines, based on the authentication data, whether the user has sufficient user access privileges to perform the request. If user has sufficient user access privileges to perform of the request, then the document-processing device performs the request.

  • Publication number: 20100302579
Abstract: Methods and system for printing a print job with cloud storage are disclosed. A web print server is provided for accessing a cloud storage server. The web print server is operable to download a print job from the cloud storage server to the web print server. The web print server downloads the print job based on an identification (of the print job) that is received from a web client remotely over a network. Subsequently, the print web server sends the print job to a printer for the print job to be printed from the printer. In one embodiment, the printer may comprise the web client.

  • Publication number: 20100260221
Abstract: Proposed is a light emitting module (1), comprising a semiconductor light emitting device (10) and a thermal switch (20). The thermal switch (20) is arranged to protect the device (10) from over heating. At elevated temperatures the junction of the device (10) may reach a critical level causing catastrophic breakdown of the device. According to the invention, the thermal switch is arranged to shunt the semiconductor light emitting device. This is especially advantageous as the thermal protection offered by the switch (20) correlates directly to the (junction) temperature of the device (10).

  • Publication number: 20100157349
Abstract: A document identifier is added to print data sent to a printer connected in a network. Each page of the resulting printed document contains the document identifier, and the document identifier is associated with a security level and added to a database connected to the network. When a user later issues a scanning command to scan the document, the document identifier is obtained from the scan data and transmitted to a server. The server compares both the user and the document identifier to the database and depending on the results, either permits the scan operation to complete or aborts. If the scan operation is completed, the scan data is sent each of a set of one or more destinations that (1) are directed by the user and (2) has an appropriate security level to receive the scan data.

  • Publication number: 20100102740
Abstract: A control circuit is configured to control the charge and discharge of a flash unit. The flash unit includes an anode, a cathode, and a trigger electrode. The control circuit includes a charging circuit and a triggering circuit. One terminal of the charging circuit is coupled to a charging terminal and another terminal is coupled to the anode and the cathode. One terminal of the triggering circuit is coupled to a triggering terminal, another terminal is couple to the trigger electrode. The charging circuit includes a first capacitor coupled to the cathode and a second capacitor coupled to the anode. When the charging terminal receives a charging voltage and the triggering terminal receives a high-level voltage, three times charging voltage is formed between the anode and the cathode; then the flash unit generates a flash.

  • Publication number: 20090320127
Abstract: An approach is provided for printing locked print data using user and print data authentication. The approach is applicable to a wide variety of contexts and implementations and includes the use of bi-directional security measures to ensure a secure transmission of a document to a printer and secure retrieval of the document from the printer by one or more intended recipients. In particular, the bi-directional security measures ensure that: 1) the document is received only by the intended recipient designated by the creator, 2) both the document's creator and the intended recipient are successfully authenticated, 3) the document received by the intended recipient is the document that was created by the creator, and 4) the document received by the intended recipient is identical to the document created by the creator.

  • Publication number: 20090077654
Abstract: Techniques are provided for securely managing, using smart cards, the usage of a peripheral device. In one embodiment, both the peripheral device and the smart card have digital certificates and a means for authenticating each other. Each device requires authentication of the other device before access to the device's resources is granted. In one embodiment of the invention, the smart card executes a local Java application for managing usage data. The application provides quota and prior usage data to the peripheral device, and updates on the smart card usage data provided by the peripheral device. The usage data on the smart card is used to limit, audit, or track access to resources and operations on the peripheral device. In another embodiment, the authentication and usage management functions of the smart card is implemented on a remote server.

  • Publication number: 20080301792
Abstract: Techniques and systems for maintaining a secure document replication environment based on information contained in CACs are disclosed. In one embodiment of the invention, a device such as an MFP, a printer, a scanner, a copier, or a fax machine comprises or is connected to a card reader. The device prevents users from using the device until the users have been authenticated. In order to authenticate himself to the device, a user inserts his CAC into the card reader. The device reads the user's digital certificate off of the user's CAC. The device determines whether the digital certificate is valid. If the digital certificate is not valid, then, in one embodiment of the invention, the device prevents the user from using any of the device's functions (e.g., printing, scanning, copying, faxing, etc.).
