  • Publication number: 20130267234
Abstract: A method includes performing a handover for a mobile device between first and second RAT networks. The first RAT network has a tracking area. The second RAT network has a routing area. Idle mode signaling reduction is activated in the mobile device including activating first and second timers respectively for the first and second RAT networks. In response to either one of the first and second timers expiring, a tracking or routing area update is sent to a first base station. The first base station is in the first RAT network or the second RAT network. The first timer is reset while the second timer maintains a set offset from the first timer. The tracking area update indicates that the mobile device has performed a handover to the first RAT network. The routing area update indicates that the mobile device has handed over to the second RAT network.

  • Patent number: 8503291
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for directing a beam towards a receiving device in the presence of interference. A beam transmitted by a transmission source is received at a receiving device. The received beam is affected by an interference signal from an interfering source. The receiving device computes a covariance matrix that represents a channel estimate associated with the interfering source. The receiving device modifies a predetermined sounding signal based on the covariance matrix for transmission to the transmission source. The receiving device causes the transmission source to estimate an equivalent channel matrix based on the predetermined sounding signal and the modified predetermined sounding signal. The equivalent channel matrix represents the channel estimate associated with the interfering source and a channel estimate associated with the transmission source.

  • Patent number: 8411805
Abstract: A mobile station (MS) includes an estimation module, a filter module, and a filter selection module. The estimation module receives an input signal having subcarriers and generates first channel estimates based on the input signal. The subcarriers are selectively used by a base station (BS) to transmit preamble sequences when communicating with the MS. The filter module includes first and second filters. One of the first and second filters selectively filters the first channel estimates and generates second channel estimates. The filter selection module selects the one of the first and second filters based on a number of the subcarriers used to transmit the preamble sequences.

  • Patent number: 8379508
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for computing a relative path delay between multiple transmitting source to select a source that is closest to a receiving device. Preamble sequences unique to each source are received by a receiving device. The receiving devices determines based on a channel estimation or differential algorithm which transmitting source is closer to the receiving device. The channel estimation algorithm computes the path delay based on a channel estimation correlation at different preamble sequence indices. The differential algorithm computes the path delay based on a correlation between the received and transmitted preamble sequences at different preamble sequence indices. The receiving device selects the closer of the multiple sources to be the source from which to extract data.

  • Patent number: 8238367
Abstract: Communication between a base station and remote stations is partitioned into frames, each including subframes having a number of slots that are allocated based on data rates for each remote station. For communication in a half-duplex mode, multiple subframes are used, each separated by a frame partition, such that a first user group of remote stations can receive down-link data in a first subframe while another user group of remote stations can transmit up-link data during that same subframe. For the next subframe, the converse happens. Slot allocation is achieved in such a half-duplex system based on weighted down-link and up-link data rates and without first or simultaneously determining user group allocation or frame partition, which are instead determined in response to the determined slot allocations for each remote station, e.g., using a linear programming technique.

  • Patent number: 8121085
Abstract: Communication between a base station and remote stations is partitioned into frames, each including a first frequency reuse zone having a number of slots. Slots are allocated by assigning a first data rate to each remote station for communication using the first frequency reuse zone. Each remote station is assigned a respective slot allocation comprising a first number of slots of the first frequency reuse zone and has a weighted data rate dependent on the first data rate and the respective slot allocation. The slot allocations are determined so as to maximize the minimum of the weighted data rates of the remote stations. Slots may be allocated using a data rate assigner to assign a first data rate to each remote station for communication using slots of the first frequency reuse zone, and using a slot allocation provider to provide a respective slot allocation for each remote station.

  • Patent number: 8045636
Abstract: Autocorrelation algorithms are employed in systems and methods to detect preamble symbols for frame synchronization in WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) or OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems. An ML (“Maximum Likelihood”) estimator estimates segment index and frame timing information for an ideal signal scenario. When using the ML estimator, a received time domain signal is sampled. Groups of samples are formed, and the group is further divided into a plurality of portions. Then, an autocorrelation between time domain samples of each portion results in a maximum value which indicates the start of a preamble of the time domain signal. Frame synchronization can then be performed. In other transmission scenarios, the algorithm is modified to use modified estimators of the preamble symbol location. When using the modified estimators, less than all of the portions of samples are compared to one another to find a maximum value.
