  • Patent number: 7900755
Abstract: An energy absorbing device is provided that includes a damper assembly having inner and outer concentric tubes and a piston movable within the inner tube. The damper assembly is configured to form bi-fold valve-type cavities to operatively connect an inner chamber of the inner tube with an outer chamber formed between the inner and outer tubes. A magnetorheological fluid fills the chambers and the bi-fold valve-type cavities. The magnetorheological fluid preferably contains coated magnetic particles at about 10 to 60 percent by volume. Electrical coils adjacent the bi-fold valves are selectively energizable to such that the energy absorbing device provides a tunable damping force, preferably over the entire range of velocities of the piston, especially in automotive applications.

  • Patent number: 7895917
Abstract: A conformal grasp handle that molds itself to an applied load of an object, e.g., an end user's hands as they grip the conformal grasp handles. The conformal grasp handle retains the shape of the local deformation caused by the applied load until the handle is intentionally reshaped or the applied force of the object onto the handle is removed. As such, the grasp handles can advantageously be used to adapt to the individual user's anthropometric measurements, posture, hand position, and the like, among others. Suitable automotive applications include, but are not intended to be limited to, steering wheels, shift knobs, and the like.

  • Publication number: 20100256791
Abstract: A method of forming a cylindrical magnetic motor core having predetermined magnetic properties includes recording a 3D geometrical model, translating the geometry of the model into control parameters, and positioning magnetic material within a staging area surrounded by independently-controllable magnetic field generators. The control parameters are transmitted to the field generators to generate 3D magnetic fields, which are controlled to magnetically shape the material into a motor core substantially conforming to the model. After shaping, the core may be solidified to form a finished core. A system for forming the magnetic motor core includes a host computer controlling the position and motion of each field generator. The 3D model is used by the host computer to control the magnetic field generators and shape the MR material into the magnetic motor core.
