  • Patent number: 8048831
Abstract: A novel crankcase dispersant reaction product having fused therein an antioxidant moiety whereby the dispersant reaction product can function as an antioxidant while retaining at least two structural domains, one being a polar domain for association with sludge and a hydrocarbyl domain for oil solubility, so that the dispersant can function as a chemical agent to suspend sludge and prevent agglomeration of sludge precursors and soot so the latter can be readily removed from the system, such as by filtering, instead of being deleteriously deposited on internal engine components, as well as lubricant compositions incorporating such novel dispersant and, for instance, engines lubricated with such lubricant compositions.

  • Publication number: 20110111994
Abstract: A polyalkenyl succinic anhydride is prepared with low amounts of resinous or chlorinated byproducts in a two-step process whereby a polyalkene is first reacted with an unsaturated organic acid in a thermal ene reaction, followed with exposure to a gaseous halogen in presence of an additional amount of the unsaturated organic acidic reagent. The foregoing process produces a polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride having a high ratio of succinic anhydride functional groups to polyisobutenyl backbone groups. Such a polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride is particular suitable for the production of oil-soluble hydrocarbyl succinimides that have good dispersant properties when added to lubricating oil compositions.

  • Publication number: 20100056407
Abstract: Different zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDPs) exhibit different volatilities and have different effects on automotive emissions control catalysts. The ZDDPs and their respective decomposition fragments that have low volatility will have a correspondingly lower detrimental effect on combustion emissions control systems, because there are simply fewer phosphorous atoms that will pass through the combustion system to reach the emissions control system. Specifically, it has been discovered that ZDDPs that contain a significant fraction of MIBC ZDDP exhibit significantly lower volatility than other ZDDPs.
