  • Patent number: 6972020
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved orthopedic system for the modification of the distance between the maxilla and zygoma. In a preferred embodiment, the system includes proximal and distal footplates attached to an orthopedic device. The distal footplate is attached to the zygoma, with the proximal footplate being mechanically coupled to the maxilla. This mechanical coupling is achieved either through attachment directly to the maxilla or by attachment to a construct which is then wired to the patient's teeth. The orthopedic device, which may be a distractor, allows for modification of the distance between the maxilla and zygoma. The entire system can advantageously be placed intra-orally within a patient. In a preferred embodiment, the footplates are also detachable from the orthopedic device and are composed of a bioresorbable material, such that they will be absorbed by the patient's body. Methods for using this novel orthopedic system are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050203081
Abstract: Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPases) such as PTP1B can play a role in regulating a wide variety of cellular responses such as insulin signaling. Substituted bicyclic fused-thiophene compounds can inhibit PTP1B and thereby induce greater insulin sensitivity. Accordingly, PTP1B inhibition can provide an alternate treatment for PTPase-mediated disorders such as diabetes.

  • Publication number: 20040230762
Abstract: Methods, systems, and media for managing dynamic memory are disclosed. Embodiments may disclose identifying nodes with having memory for dynamic storage, and reserving a portion of the memory from the identified nodes for a heap pool. After generating a heap pool, embodiments may allocate dynamic storage from the heap pool to tasks received that are associated with one of the identified nodes. More specifically, embodiments identify the node or home node associated with the task, the amount of dynamic storage requested by the task, and create a heap object in the node associated with the task to provide the requested dynamic storage. Some embodiments involve de-allocating the dynamic storage assigned to the task upon receipt of an indication that the task is complete and the dynamic storage is no longer needed for the task. Several of such embodiments return the de-allocated dynamic storage to the heap pool for reuse.

  • Patent number: 6752029
Abstract: A variable reluctance load cell for measuring the static or slowly fluctuating load, or tension, on devices is contained in a support tube. A sensor in the tube utilizes opposing C and I shaped magnetic cores attached to opposing ends of the support tube. A magnetic circuit is formed having an inductance defined by the size of the gap between the magnetic cores with the reluctance dominated by the gap. The sensor inductance is coupled with a fixed, predetermined capacitance in a resonant LC circuit, and the resonant frequency is a function of the gap. The sensor is in a cavity within the tube, and the cavity is sealed in a manner that prevents water or other damaging agents from entering the sensor. In this manner, mounting the sensor and tube to a static device and measuring the AC voltage at the sensor, the amount of load, or stress can be determined.

  • Patent number: 6726503
Abstract: An electrical connector assembly is provided for terminating a plurality of electrical wires. A non-conductive connector housing mounts a plurality of signal terminals. A wire management module includes a non-conductive body mounting a plurality of ground terminals. The body positions a plurality of signal conductors and a plurality of ground conductors of the electrical wires, the ground conductors being terminated to the ground terminals. The ground terminals interengage with the connector housing to mount the wire management module to the housing with the signal wire conductors in position for termination to the signal terminals.
