  • Patent number: 9107149
Abstract: A method for allowing a portable computer to adjust the load of a wireless base station autonomously is disclosed. The portable computer can communicate in an infrastructure mode and an ad-hoc mode. The portable computer includes a traffic table for storing the performance of various wireless stations and the traffic of other portable computers. Each portable computer measures its traffic to a wireless base station. Then, the portable computer transmits the measured traffic to the other portable computers in the ad-hoc mode and receives the traffic of the other portable computers. A newly connected portable computer acquires the traffic in the ad-hoc mode. When the newly connected portable computer enters into a cell overlap area to connect to any wireless base station, the newly connected portable computer selects a wireless base station having little traffic based on the performance and traffic of wireless base stations instead of a wireless base station that provides a stronger radio field.

  • Patent number: 8125942
Abstract: There are provided methods and arrangements for communication in which, even in a case where an antenna that is not correctly connected is present in a wireless module provided with a plurality of antennas, high-performance data communication can be performed without using such antennas. RSSI values are detected from a plurality of receiving circuits of a wireless module, respectively, and a computer judges whether or not there is a significant difference between a first RSSI value detected from one receiving circuit and a second RSSI value detected from another receiving circuit. In a case where it is judged that there is the significant difference, the computer recognizes that the receiving circuit from which a larger RSSI value has been detected is connected to an antenna and the receiving circuit from which a smaller RSSI value has been detected is not connected to the antenna, and the receiving circuit recognized to be unconnected to the antenna is set to operation stop.

  • Patent number: 7639640
Abstract: In a network security system, clients search for neighbor access points (APs) in order to establish wireless connections to a LAN. As a result of the search, each of the clients dispatches a list of access points obtained to a controller. The controller detects non-registered access points by comparing a list of previously registered access points with the lists dispatched by the clients.

  • Patent number: 7366304
Abstract: A method that utilizes software and hardware mechanisms to meet the FCC requirement for a U-NII antenna to be an integral part of the device in which it operates, while providing wireless ready U-NII devices and CRUable U-NII radios. Enhancements are made to the software BIOS, including the inclusion of a table of approved radio-antenna PCI ID pairs to create an authentication scheme that verifies and authenticates the radio and antenna combination as being an FCC-approved unique coupling during boot-up of the system. The BIOS also comprises an OEM field that stores an encrypted secret key utilized to complete a second check of the radio model placed in the device. During boot up of the device, the PCI ID pairs from the BIOS are compared against the PCI ID of the radio and the secret key is checked against the radio model.

  • Patent number: 7359334
Abstract: A computer device, according to the present invention, includes: a power source judging means for judging whether power is supplied from an AC power source to the computer device capable of connecting with a wireless communications module which transmits and receives data to/from an access point; and a control means for controlling the timing of measuring the strength of connection with the above described access point based on judgment by the above described power source judging means. Therefore, by setting the timing of measuring the strength of connection with the access point based on whether or not the computer device is used at an almost fixed location, which in turn is judged by distinguishing the type of power source, it is possible to change the amounts of data transmitted and received by the wireless communications module.

  • Patent number: 7117013
Abstract: A method that utilizes both software and combination software and hardware mechanisms to comply with the FCC requirement for an U-NII antenna to be an integral part of the device, while providing CRUable dual mode wireless cards and wireless-ready U-NII devices. Enhancements are made to the system BIOS and Device Driver, and two new software-implemented utilities are provided to create authentication schemes that verify and authenticates the CRUable dual mode U-NII radio and antenna combination as being an FCC approved unique coupling during operation of the system. The system boots with only ISM transmission capability and is allowed to complete a U-NII transmission request only with an approved U-NII radio-antenna combination.

  • Patent number: 7072691
Abstract: A method that utilizes software means to meet the FCC requirement for an U-NII antenna to be an integral part of the device in which it operates, while providing wireless ready U-NII devices and CRUable U-NII radios. Enhancements are made to the system BIOS, including the inclusion of a table of PCI IDs and secret key pairs. The CRUable radio includes a pair of validation registers (VRs) and an EEPROM storing an PCI ID and secret key of an approved device. During boot up of the device, the PCI ID and secret key from the device's BIOS are compared against the PCI ID and secret key stored in the radio's EEPROM. The first comparison completes a radio-to-device authentication in the device, while the second comparison completes a device-to-radio authentication in the radio. U-NII transmission capability is enabled only when both parameters match, indicating FCC approved device-antenna-radio combination under the “integral” requirement.

  • Publication number: 20050160302
Abstract: In order to conserve power in a computer display, an apparatus is provided to switch the display to a power-saving mode when, for example, no operation has been performed on the computer for some predetermined time. In the power-saving mode, a full-screen black screen is displayed behind any currently active window. Information about window location and activity is acquired and maintained to improve efficiency. Power-saving mode may be exited explicitly or in response to activity. Window order and display may also be switched on the fly appropriately.
