  • Patent number: 9735702
Abstract: Provided is an operating method of a full-bridge sub-module (FBSM)-based modular multilevel converter for HVDC transmission with AC-side voltage boosting. The peak value of the AC-side voltage is increased under a constant DC-link voltage by using FBSM's negative output voltage under steady state, wherein keeping the semiconductor's current rating constant during AC-side voltage boosting is in favor of reducing converter cost by decreasing energy interaction between the upper and lower arms in a leg, and further capacitance value of FBSM's capacitor under a constant capacitor voltage ripple, keeping the RMS value of AC-side current constant during AC-side voltage boosting can effectively improve transmission capacity of the converter while reducing converter cost, and keeping converter transmission capacity constant during AC-side voltage boosting can reduce RMS value of arm currents while reducing converter cost, thereby reducing power loss of FBSMs and improving converter efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7782532
Abstract: An optical isolator includes a birefringent material and a Faraday rotator. The birefringent material receives a forward light propagating in a forward direction and a backward light propagating opposite to the forward direction. The birefringent material has an optical axis, wherein the forward light has a first polarization aligned perpendicular to the optical axis and is configured to pass the first birefringent material substantially along the forward direction. At least a portion of the backward light has a second polarization not perpendicular to the optical axis. The first birefringent material can displace the backward light to form a first displaced backward light. A Faraday rotator can rotate the forward light, and the backward light or the first displaced backward light by a same predetermined angle along the rotation direction.

  • Patent number: 6741122
Abstract: An improved method and design for adjusting clock skew in a wire trace is disclosed. Aspects of the invention include a corrugated pattern wire trace bracketed by a pair of parallel conducting wire frames with wire extensions projecting between the corrugations of the wire trace. The wire frames are connected to a voltage supply. The transmission properties of the wire trace, and thus the degree of clock skew associated with the wire trace, are affected by the number of wire extensions protruding between the corrugations, their degree of penetration, as well as other factors inherent in the design. The present design can achieve the same degree of clock skew with a smaller surface area covered and with fewer resistive losses than with prior art designs.
