  • Patent number: 10725373
Abstract: A technique, and its applications, for high resolution, rapid, and simple nanopatterning. The general method has been demonstrated in several forms and applications. One is patterning nanophotonic structures at an optical fiber tip for refractive index sensing. Another is patterning nanoresonator structures on a sensor substrate for plasmonic effect related detection of VOCs. In the latter example, a graphene oxide coated plasmonic crystal as a gas sensor capable of identifying different gas species using an array of such structures. By coating the surface of multiple identical plasmonic crystals with different thicknesses of Graphene-Oxide (GO) layer, the effective refractive index of the GO layer on each plasmonic crystal is differently modulated when exposed to a specific gas. Identification of various gas species is accomplished using pattern recognition algorithm.

  • Publication number: 20200088208
Abstract: A process for optimizing the design of a semi-open centrifugal pump impeller involves the steps of, reducing the number of long blades and adding a medium length splitter blade and a short length splitter blade having varying circumferential distances between any two optimized long blades. Each medium length and short length splitter blade have the same outlet position, profile and thickness as the optimized long blade; however, the medium length and short length splitter blades have different inlet positions relative to the optimized long blade. The long blade, medium length splitter blade and short length splitter blade are arranged in circumferential sequence along the direction of rotation of the impeller. This optimization improves various problems arising from the original semi-open centrifugal pumps, including low efficiency, significant loss at the inlet, inlet cavitation, separation of boundary layers at the blade inlets, narrow lift range of the dead point and excessive noise.

Abstract: An electrophoresis chip-based setup for detection of different ions in buffer solution. The device is able to differentiate ions in, e.g., real soil or other solutions, and to detect concentration of a specific ion in the solution. Fabrication of the electrophoresis chip can use a soft lithography based molding process. The chip can be made out of PDMS on a glass substrate where on-chip valves were used to control timing of injecting sample and buffer solutions. Detection electrodes are used to detect the presence of ions over a period of several minutes. A controllable high voltage power supply system and related signal acquisition, processing and detection setup can be implemented with the sensor in a system. • Publication number: 20190380044
Abstract: A disclosed system quantifies the power distribution of a wireless signal within a constrained environment using non-sequential ray tracing. For each ray, one or more ray-reflecting surface is prescreened to identify collision-eligible surfaces and identify a collision surface from the collision-eligible surfaces, wherein the collision surface is the first ray-reflecting surface that a ray collides with. A power distribution component, indicating the position and power of a ray at a particular elevation within the environment, is added to a cumulative power distribution. If a reflected ray corresponding to each collision is calculated and satisfies ray eligibility conditions, a collision surface may be determined for the reflected ray. Collision surfaces may be identified by evaluating a target function for a number of ray positions, where the target function evaluates to zero when displacement between the ray and the ray-reflecting surface is zero.

  • Patent number: 10470379
Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for large scale, high throughput phenotyping of items including plants to derive environment/genetics correlations based on controlled variation of environment. Spatial and temporal resolution is improved by an integrated system that can use space efficiently yet concurrently process a large number of replicates but in varying environments. This is accomplished by using an array of miniature greenhouses, each in communication with one or more generators or regulators of an environmental factor that can be independently supplied and controlled to each miniature greenhouse. The controller also controls acquisition of data from each greenhouse as well as processing of that data into phenomic/genomic correlations.

  • Patent number: 10353144
Abstract: Embodiments of optical fiber may include cladding features that include a material (e.g., fluorine-doped silica glass) that may produce a very low relative refractive index difference with respect to cladding material in which the cladding features are disposed. This relative refractive index difference may be characterized by (n1?n2)/n1, where n1 is the index of refraction of the cladding material in which the cladding features are included, and n2 is the index of refraction of the cladding features. In certain embodiments, the relative refractive index difference may be less than about 4.5×10?3. In various embodiments, the configuration of the cladding features including, for example, the size and spacing of the cladding features, can be selected to provide for confinement of the fundamental mode yet leakage for the second mode and higher modes, which may provide mode filtering, single mode propagation, and/or low bend loss.

  • Patent number: 10197727
Abstract: Holey fibers provide optical propagation. In various embodiments, a large core holey fiber comprises a cladding region formed by large holes arranged in few layers. The number of layers or rows of holes about the large core can be used to coarse tune the leakage losses of the fundamental and higher modes of a signal, thereby allowing the non-fundamental modes to be substantially eliminated by leakage over a given length of fiber. Fine tuning of leakage losses can be performed by adjusting the hole dimension and/or spacing to yield a desired operation with a desired leakage loss of the fundamental mode. Resulting holey fibers have a large hole dimension and spacing, and thus a large core, when compared to traditional fibers and conventional fibers that propagate a single mode. Other loss mechanisms, such as bend loss and modal spacing can be utilized for selected modes of operation of holey fibers.
