  • Patent number: 9977473
Abstract: A decoupled partitioning divider for a data storage system enclosure includes a first leg having proximal and distal halves and a second leg having proximal and distal halves, and in which the first and second legs are coupled together at either the proximal or distal half and uncoupled from each other at the other of the proximal and distal halves, so that the divider legs are decoupled from each other at one half or one end. When installed in a data storage system enclosure between adjacent data storage devices, such as hard disk drives, vibration transfer among the devices housed therein may be inhibited.

  • Publication number: 20170336271
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to a method for monitoring optical power in a HAMR device. In one embodiment, the method includes enhancing a thermal sensor bandwidth through advanced electrical detection techniques. The advanced electrical detection techniques include obtaining calibration waveform data for a thermal sensor by calibrating the thermal sensor, obtaining real-time waveform data for the thermal sensor that may deviate from the calibration waveform data, updating the calibration waveform data to include the real-time waveform data, repeating obtaining real-time waveform data and updating the calibration waveform data during writing operations. By updating the calibration waveform data, the bandwidth of the thermal sensor is determined by a fixed sampling time interval, and the thermal sensor rise time to steady state would not be a limitation to its response time.

  • Patent number: 8941944
Abstract: A method of radially positioning a heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head writes data to a first band, wherein a radial position of the HAMR head within each data track is defined by a positional bias and a track location. A determination is made regarding whether a threshold has been reached with respect to the first band. If the write threshold has been reached with respect to the first band, then the positional bias associated with the first band is modified to evenly distribute thermal exposure of data tracks in the first band.

  • Patent number: 8842507
Abstract: A thermally-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) disk drive uses a thermal sensor to accurately monitor laser power during writing. The disk drive controller, or a separate processor, computes a prediction of the laser power from a history of laser power settings. This predicted value is compared with the measured value from the thermal sensor. If the difference is too large or too small, indicating that the laser power is too high or too low, an error signal is sent to the disk drive controller. The disk drive controller may adjust the laser power setting and initiate a re-write of the data. The predicted laser power is calculated from a convolution of a sequence of current and prior laser power settings with a sequence of coefficients. A calibration process generates the sequence of coefficients when the disk drive is idle or just after it is powered on.

  • Publication number: 20140153130
Abstract: Approaches for a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprising a head slider comprising a thermoelectric embedded contact sensor. The thermoelectric embedded contact sensor may comprise a first and second conductive lead and a metallic component. The metallic component has a different Seebeck coefficient than the first and second conductive leads. A thermoelectric voltage across the metallic component is used to measure the distance between a head slider and a magnetic-recording disk without supplying an electrical current from a hard-disk drive to either of the first conductive lead or the second conductive lead.
