    Abstract: A light detection and ranging (LIDAR) based object tracking system includes a plurality of light emitter and sensor pairs and an object tracker. Each pair of the plurality of light emitter and sensor pairs is operable to obtain data indicative of actual locations of surrounding objects. The data is grouped into a plurality of groups by a segmentation module. Each group corresponds to one of the surrounding objects. The object tracker is configured to (1) build a plurality of models of target objects based on the plurality of groups, (2) compute a motion estimation for each of the target objects, and (3) feed a subset of data back to the segmentation module for further grouping based on a determination by the object tracker that the subset of data fails to map to a corresponding target object in the model.

In representative embodiments, the method includes (1) downsampling a 3-D point cloud generated by a distance-measurement component of the movable device to obtain a downsampled point cloud; (2) extracting ground points from the downsampled point cloud; (3) analyzing the ground points in a surface-detecting direction; and (4) identifying an object based at least in part on the downsampled point cloud and the ground points.     Abstract: A large scale dense mapping technique utilizes range data that identifies points in three dimensions. The large scale dense mapping technique utilizes the range data obtained from range sensors coupled with a depth integration technique. After dividing the world, or a portion of the world, into cells and voxels, a mapping system collects range data for a portion of the environment. To speed up the processing involving the large number range measurements, Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) memory, can be used to store data relating to the mapping of the environment. Instead of storing all of the cells of volumetric representation in the memory, just the portion of the cells associated with the range data are stored within the memory. The mapping system can use an SDF or a TSDF based volumetric representation format to represent the environment. The SDF or TSDF based volumetric representation is updated using the range data.
