  • Patent number: 6770819
Abstract: A communications cable comprises an elongate cable jacket having an internal cavity and a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors disposed in the internal cavity of the cable jacket, each of the conductors being insulated with a polymeric layer. Each of the insulated conductors within each of the twisted pairs of conductors defines a twinning helix having a first rotative direction, and each of the twisted pairs defines a bunching helix having a second rotative direction, the second rotative direction being opposite that of the first rotative direction. In this configuration, the communications cable can provide acceptable crosstalk and attenuation performance, even with foamed insulators that have demonstrated unacceptable performance when twinned and bunched in the same rotative direction.

  • Patent number: 6731629
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for communicating with a mobile station in a mobile telecommunications system utilizing a packet technology. The system includes a mobile switching center (MSC), a base station controller (BSC) and at least one radio base station (RBS) in communication with the MSC and BSC. The RBS includes a packet device for converting voice signals received from a mobile station into packet signals and transmitting the packet signals to a destination device based upon destination information provided by the MSC. The RBS also receives packet signals intended for communication with the mobile station, converts the packet signals by the packet device and sends the converted signals to the mobile station over the air interface.

  • Patent number: 6594253
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing mobility management for a Mobile Station (MS) to allow the MS to receive Internet telephone calls when the MS is in idle mode. This can be accomplished by using a voice gateway to transform an incoming Internet phone call to a normal cellular voice call. In addition, by introducing a new Intelligent Network (IN) application, which handles location updates for the MS with a central Internet telephony server, an MS in idle mode can receive incoming Internet telephony calls. The IN application can obtain a temporary Internet Protocol (IP) address for the MS from a Direct Access Unit (DAU) connected to the voice gateway associated with the serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC) and register this temporary IP address with the central Internet server, which uses this temporary IP address to forward incoming Internet telephony calls to the Voice Gateway.

  • Publication number: 20030119500
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing for terminal mobility between H.323 networks belonging to the same H.323 system. When an H.323 mobile terminal moves to a new or visitor H.323 network and attempts to register with the visitor H.323 network, the visitor H.323 network informs the home H.323 network to which the H.323 mobile terminal belongs about the move, using an H.225 Registration and Admission Control Signaling (RAS) message. In order to send such a location update RAS message to the home H.323 network, the visitor Gatekeeper determines the home Gatekeeper of the visiting H.323 mobile terminal. Thereafter, the RAS message is sent by the Gatekeeper of the visitor H.323 network to the Gatekeeper of the home H.323 network through routers and the LAN backbones of the H.323 networks of the H.323 system.

  • Patent number: 6400950
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for de-registering all Mobile Stations (MSs) at one time from a Gatekeeper of an H.323 system. In preferred embodiments, after an H.323 system shut down or upon receipt of a RESET message from a Home Location Register (HLR), the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) sends a single Unregistration Request (URQ) message to the Gatekeeper requesting de-registration of all of the MSs served by the MSC. The H.225 protocol for the URQ message is modified to indicate that all MSs associated with the MSC are to be de-registered. Alternatively, the modified URQ message can indicate that a certain group of MSs served by the MSC are to be de-registered.

  • Patent number: 6314284
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing service transparency for mobile terminating calls to a roaming H.323 mobile terminal. An H.323 mobile terminal can be assigned both an office number and a regular Mobile Station Integrated Services Digital Network (MSISDN) number. The MSISDN of the H.323 mobile terminal will not be made available to the H.323 mobile subscriber or to anyone else. The MSISDN will only be used internally within the Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) and H.323 system to route the call properly. Thus, whenever a call attempt is made to the H.323 mobile terminal, the call shall always be routed to the H.323 Gatekeeper. If the H.323 mobile terminal has roamed outside the H.323 network, the H.323 Gatekeeper can apply mobile terminating services to the incoming call and route the call to the serving PLMN of the H.323 mobile terminal using the H.323 mobile terminal's MSISDN.

  • Patent number: 6289223
Abstract: A system and method in a telecommunications system for enabling an originating mobile unit to deliver SMS messages to a select plurality of destination mobile units. A mobile station ISDN number (MSISDN) is assigned to a usergroup wherein this usergroup contains at least one and preferably a plurality of member MSISDNs. An originating mobile unit may then transmit an SMS message to a plurality of destination units by transmitting an SMS message addressed to a predefined usergroup MSISDN thereby eliminating the necessity of the originating mobile unit addressing and transmitting the SMS message to each member of the defined usergroup. Allowances are made to restrict such transmission to specified originating units.

  • Patent number: 6081731
Abstract: Selective carrier denial in a cellular system restricts some or all carrier-handled calls from a given cellular subscriber while simultaneously allowing other cellular calls. A restriction flag or indicator in a Visitor Location Register (VLR) of the cellular system is set by a Home Location Register (HLR) which contains a list of those carriers denied to subscribers. When the restriction flag is set, the HLR is interrogated to determine if the call is restricted. Alternatively, the restriction flag may reside within the subscriber's mobile phone. Further, the VLR or mobile phone may, respectively, contain a list of denied carriers and internally determine if carrier denial applies without resort to the HLR.

  • Patent number: 6049714
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method for routing a phone call when the switch serving the caller cannot access a database is disclosed. The system includes a switch serving mobile stations, a node for receiving information from the switch and for determining whether or not the telephone call terminates at a mobile station, a database for sending information when the telephone call terminates at a mobile station and a second database for sending information when the telephone call does not terminate at a mobile station. The method involves receiving the telephone call at a switch serving mobile stations sending information pertaining to the telephone call to a node, determining whether the telephone call terminates at a mobile station, when the telephone call does terminate at a mobile station, accessing one database, and when the call does not terminate at a mobile station, accessing a second database.

  • Patent number: 6047056
Abstract: A system and method for suppressing redundant database queries between two switching points in a telecommunications system, where the switching points are unable to utilize the ISUP communications protocol. The system and method are implemented by using a parameter of the communications protocol to indicate whether a database query has been performed. When the receiving switch receives the information, the switch is suppressed from performing a redundant database query by the parameter of the communications protocol.
