  • Publication number: 20150031571
Abstract: Gold nanoparticles having luminol covalently linked thereto and optionally functionalized with an oligonucleotide and bacterial or viral detection assays. In one aspect, the detection system for detecting an analyte in a sample comprises a light-shielding container having a fiberoptic cable for transmitting light generated within the light-shielding container to a photodetector; a plurality of functionalized nanoparticles deposited in solid form on or within a support, such that the support is located within the light-shielding container; wherein the functionalized nanoparticles comprise nanoparticles covalently attached to one or more chemiluminescent moieties; and a reagent system which causes the chemiluminescent moieties to produce light in the presence of the reagent system and the analyte in the sample.

  • Publication number: 20140262575
Abstract: The presently disclosure describes a motion assistance system for a wheelchair, for example, a powered drive wheel system that can continually drive a wheelchair in a circular or elliptical path. The motion assistance system comprises a mounting mechanism attachable to one or more structural elements of the wheelchair, and a drive linkage pivotable with respect to the mounting mechanism. A drive wheel can be mounted to an end of the drive linkage such that the drive wheel contacts the ground when installed on the wheelchair. The drive wheel comprises a plurality of lateral rollers positioned radially about the circumference of the power drive wheel. The lateral rollers can rotate about an axis tangential to the circumference of the drive wheel in order to facilitate driving the wheelchair in a radial direction.

  • Patent number: 8770611
Abstract: An adjustable manual wheelchair handrim with a moveable elastomeric friction band. The position of the tubular handrim can be moved to a desired location relative to the wheel rim depending on the needs and limits of the user. The movable friction band is stretched around the drive surface of the handrim at a desired location preventing it from moving and providing increased frictional properties when gripped by the user during pushes. The friction band can be permanently affixed at a location to further prevent movement and slippage between the handrim and the friction band.

  • Publication number: 20130008732
Abstract: A motion-based push activation power assist system for manual wheelchairs. The system uses motion-based measurements to determine when the user applies a push to the wheelchair handrims and brakes with the handrims. The push recognition activates a drive system that provides an assistive driving force-pulse to the wheelchair to reduce the demand on the user during propulsion. The brake recognition deactivates the power assist. The provided power assist is proportional to the sensed push and can be modulated to different proportional settings.

  • Patent number: 8007407
Abstract: A wheelchair-accessible treadmill with a safety system allowing wheelchair users to exercise without the risk off steering off-course, tipping over, or rolling backwards off the treadmill. The wheelchair is secured by straps or similar means to two or more linear bearings that move along the side of the treadmill on rods or in tracks. When securely fastened, these allow the wheelchair to move forward and backward on the treadmill belt. The treadmill belt may be wider than standard, the height may be lower than standard, and a ramp may be used for access. An optical sensor may be used to determine the forward and backward movement of the wheelchair user. Wheelchair specific programs may be available through the control panel.

  • Patent number: 7988172
Abstract: A wheelchair having a lower frame with drive wheels and forwardly extending arms with casters and an upper frame with a seat and backrest. Linkage assemblies on opposing sides pivotably attach at a first end to the lower frame and at a second end to the upper frame. Power cylinders attached on opposing sides are extendable between the upper frame and the lower frame and are lockable from moving from a selected position. When unlocked, the power cylinders apply a supplemental force in association with a force applied by a user on the drive wheels for moving the upper frame relative to the lower frame guided by the linkage assembly. A method of adjusting the seat height of a wheelchair is disclosed.
