  • Patent number: 9259280
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and systems for operating a surgical system. In accordance with a method, a position of a surgical instrument is measured, the surgical instrument being included in a mechanical assembly having a plurality of joints and a first number of degrees of freedom, the position of the surgical instrument being measured for each of a second number of degrees of freedom of the surgical instrument. The method further includes estimating a position of each of the joints, where estimating the position of each joint includes applying the position measurements to at least one kinematic model of the mechanical assembly, the kinematic model having a third number of degrees of freedom greater than the first number of degrees of freedom. The method further includes controlling the mechanical assembly based on the estimated position of the joints.

  • Publication number: 20160040715
Abstract: A roller thrust bearing including a first ring including a first radial portion, and a second ring including a radially inner flange and a second radial portion is provided. Rolling elements each having a length are supported between the first ring and the second ring. A cage including an annular body defines a plurality of pockets, and the rolling elements are located in at least some of the pockets. The pockets each have a radial opening, and the length of the rolling elements is less than a length of the radial opening of the pockets, defining a clearance between at least one end side of each of the rolling elements and at least one radial end face of respective ones of the pockets that contain the rolling elements. The clearance provides radial play between each of the rolling elements and the respective ones of the pockets.

  • Patent number: 9222508
Abstract: A bearing race encapsulation apparatus, which has a spring assembly integrated into a hearing that allows the hearing to compensate for varying expansions and contractions caused by differences in temperature. The bearing race encapsulation apparatus includes an outer bearing ring with an end face and an outer face with a indent formed in the outer face. An encapsulation ring, which has a retention element that is snapped into the indent of the outer bearing ring, a first segment that extends axially outwardly from the retention element, and a second segment that extends radially inwardly from the first segment. A spring is arranged axially between the second segment of the encapsulation ring and the outer bearing ring to compensate for the expansion and contraction.

  • Publication number: 20150349966
Abstract: An authentication process controls access from a client terminal 2 to a remote server 3 via an unsecure network, by transmitting a challenge 63 from the server to the client in the form of a matrix barcode into which is embedded a sequence of images embedded in it selected (step 61) from a predetermined set of images stored on the server. The user responds to the challenge (e.g by sorting the images into groups, or order, according to a rule which is a shared secret (step 64) and generates a response in the form of a code (step 67) generated dynamically by convolving the user response 64 with a random PIN string (65) extracted from the matrix barcode, and data intrinsic to the user terminal, using a predetermined dynamically generated encryption algorithm for transmission to the server (step 68) for verification (69).

  • Publication number: 20150251103
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus are provided for interactively playing with a printed image. A printed image resembling a game board, book, or picture, is provided. The printed image includes a plurality of feedback areas in which an indicator color is printed of a predetermined wavelength of light. A figurine is provided that includes a light source, a light sensor, and a plurality of outputs is associated with each color of indicator color. The light source and light sensor are placed in proximity to one of the feedback areas in the image. Activation of the figurine causes the light source to illuminate a feedback area and the sensor to determine the wavelength of light of the illuminated feedback area. A controller selects one of the plurality of outputs associated with the indicator color and an output component provides the selected output.

  • Patent number: 9039483
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus are provided for interactively playing with a printed image. A printed image resembling a game board, book, or picture, is provided. The printed image includes a registration area and a plurality of feedback areas in which an indicator color is printed at a predetermined level, e.g. percentage of area. A figurine is provided that includes a light source and light sensor. The light source and light sensor are placed in proximity to the designated areas in the image to sense the level of the indicator color printed therein and an associated output is provided. The registration area is useable to identify a predefined template associated with the image to allow feedback of the figurine with a plurality of different printed images. The figurine can include an ultraviolet light source to activate graphics printed in the image with photochromic ink.

  • Patent number: 8905643
Abstract: A thermal compensation element which has an inner ring, an outer ring, and a washer. The washer is arranged within the inner ring and the outer ring is mounted over the inner ring, encapsulating the washer, which can be a split wave spring. The inner ring and the outer ring each have retention features to ensure they are retained relative to each other. The thermal compensation, which is positioned between a housing or a shaft, can account for variations in loading and/or temperature that may occur to a bearing and a shaft system when the shaft and an associated component are made of different materials and have different coefficients of thermal expansion by ensuring a proper axial preload is maintained on the bearing.
