  • Publication number: 20070002884
Abstract: The invention proposes a method for scanning an access network, comprising the steps of sending a plurality of probe requests directed to access networks within a first time period, waiting for responses to the plurality of requests within a second time period following the first time period, and detecting the access networks based on the received responses. The invention also proposes a corresponding device for wireless communication.

  • Publication number: 20060256747
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for adapting a transmission rate for providing data in a downlink direction from a network element such as an access point (AP) in a wireless network to a terminal, wherein the method features the step of the terminal providing a message to the network element containing information to assist the network element in adapting the communication link, including one or more parameters related to the transmission rate or retransmission retry, in the downlink direction. In operation, the network element receives the message and adapts the communication link in the downlink direction accordingly based on the message.

  • Publication number: 20060179365
Abstract: The techniques described increase efficiency and operation of a device operating in one or more communication systems. These embodiments provide a method for a device to perform selected scanning procedures of one or more communication systems based on the type of event detected by the device. One method includes detection of the opening or closing of the flip cover of the device and performing scanning as a result of detecting the event. Another method performs scanning in different modes such as high-scan, medium-scan and low-scan modes.

  • Publication number: 20060135068
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating identification of primary, secondary, and hidden SSID values in a multi-network WLAN system. A determiner embodied at a mobile terminal determines primary SSID values of networks whose beacon signals are delivered to the mobile terminal. And, responsive to the determinations, further determinations are made as to where to send subsequent probe requests to probe for secondary or hidden SSID values associated with the access points from which the beacon signals are broadcast. Thereafter, selection is made of the network with which the mobile terminal shall communicate.

  • Publication number: 20060009219
Abstract: A system and method for using licensed radio technology for determining the operation parameters which should be used by a terminal. The present invention involves the terminal using its GSM system, if activated, to determine whether mobile country code for a nearby cellular terminal is located within the United States or Canada. If the code designates the United States or Canada, then the terminal uses the US domain and the corresponding transmission channels and power levels. If the code does not designate the United State or Canada, then an ETSI domain is used, along with the appropriate transmission channels and power levels.

  • Publication number: 20050143071
Abstract: The invention relates to applying a handover algorithm in a mobile terminal. In the method, the state of a user interface component of the terminal is checked, and the handover algorithm is applied on the basis of the current state of the user interface component. The handover algorithm is applied only if the current state of the user interface component is active.

  • Publication number: 20040264427
Abstract: The invention relates to selecting connection settings in a telecommunication system. In accordance with the method, history data is maintained, in which at least one network address is defined and also one connection setting, which has been used for establishing a connection to the network address. In response to the fact that there is a need to arrange a connection to the desired network address, the history data is checked and the selection of the connection settings to be used is arranged by means of the history data.

  • Publication number: 20040266436
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for arranging handover in a wireless telecommunications system. Connection settings are stored in a terminal, wherein at least one network identifier is associated with alternative connection settings, the network identifier identifying a target network reachable by a connection from the terminal. The network identifier associated with the currently applied connection settings is compared with the network identifiers associated with the other available connection settings. The connection settings associated with the same network identifier as the one associated with the currently applied connection settings are then selected. The handover may then be carried out by using the selected connection settings.
