  • Publication number: 20200076565
Abstract: A radio frequency front end (RFFE) is configured to support dual connectivity communications, in which two different radio access technologies such as 4th-Generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5th-Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) data connections are used simultaneously for communications between a wireless communication device and respective LTE and NR base stations. In described embodiments, the RFFE uses two power amplifiers to reduce intermodulation distortion (IMD). The two power amplifiers produce output signals for a 4G LTE uplink and a 5G NR uplink, respectively. The RFFE also has a combiner that mixes the output signals to produce a composite output signal representing both LTE and NR data. Bypass switches may be used to configure the RFFE so that it can be used for single conventional 4G LTE communications.

  • Patent number: 10582557
Abstract: A radio frequency front end (RFFE) is configured to support dual connectivity communications, in which two different radio access technologies such as LTE and NR are used simultaneously for uplink communications from a wireless communications device to a base station. The RFFE has two channels and two respectively associated antennas. The first channel transmits an NR signal from the first antenna. The second channel transmits an LTE signal from the second antenna. For reception, the first channel produces a main NR receive signal and LTE diversity signal. The second channel produces a main LTE receive signal and an NR diversity signal.

  • Publication number: 20200068414
Abstract: Techniques for time-division multiplexing for extending 5th Generation (5G) network coverage are described herein. In an example, a device operating in a dual transmission mode for transmitting data via a first network node associated with a 5G network and a second network node associated with a 4th Generation (4G) network at or near a same time, can determine a measurement associated with a transmission and/or receiving characteristic. The device can determine that the measurement meets or exceeds a threshold and, based at least in part on determining that the measurement meets or exceeds the threshold, the device can transition to an alternating transmission mode for transmitting data via the first network node and the second network node in an alternating pattern thereby extending 5G network coverage.

  • Publication number: 20200045720
Abstract: A telecommunication terminal can include a memory storing conflict data. The terminal can receive an uplink (UL) grant record associated with a time of permitted UL transmission, and two downlink (DL) grant records, each indicating a respective frequency and associated with a respective time. The terminal can determine that the times of DL transmission at least partly overlap with the time of UL transmission. The terminal can determine, based on the conflict data, that the frequencies of DL transmission are associated with an inter-band conflict. In response, the terminal can transmit UL data at a time later than the time of permitted UL transmission. In some examples, the terminal can receive two DL grant records, make a determination that a frequency combination of two granted DL frequencies is within a predetermine frequency range, and, in response, transmit the UL data at a time different from a DL transmission time.

  • Publication number: 20190387464
Abstract: Systems and methods discussed herein are directed to selecting and attaching to different cells within wireless communication networks when multiple cells are available. An electronic device determines that a 5G new radio (NR) radio access topology and a non-standalone radio access topology are available within a wireless communication network. The electronic device obtains a bandwidth index for the NR radio access topology and a bandwidth index for the non-standalone radio access topology and compares the two bandwidth indices. Based at least in part on results of the comparison, the electronic device selects one of either (i) the NR radio access topology or (ii) the non-standalone radio access topology and attaches to the selected topology.

  • Publication number: 20190380135
Abstract: A cellular communication device is configured to use Non-Standalone Architecture (NSA) for communicating with a cellular communication network using 4th-Generation (4G) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5th-Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) radio access technologies. In NSA mode, the device may receive separate transmit power control commands for LTE and NR transmissions, respectively. In some situations, the cellular communication device may be commanded to use LTE and NR transmit powers that when combined would exceed regulatory limits or performance limits. In these situations, LTE and NR uplink transmissions are scheduled to implement time-division multiplexing, so that the LTE and NR uplink transmissions occur during different time intervals rather than concurrently.

  • Patent number: 10499204
Abstract: Cellular communication networks may be configured to broadcast wireless emergency alert (WEA) messages to multiple receiving communication devices. A communication device has physical-layer components, such as a modem subsystem, that receive broadcast alert messages. The modem subsystem uses a cache to record received alert messages and references the cache to perform duplication checking for newly received messages. Newly received messages that are not duplicates are provided to application-layer software for further processing. The application-layer software notifies a device user of the alert message if the alert message satisfies certain criteria. In addition, the application-layer detects changes in device properties that could potentially affect the criteria and in response causes the cache of the modem subsystem to be cleared so that the modem subsystem will not declare a subsequently received alert message to be a duplicate.

  • Patent number: 10405368
Abstract: A mobile communications device is configured to implement dual connectivity, using both a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) radio and a 5th-Generation (5G) radio, for communicating with respective base stations of a cellular network. A primary transmission uplink is established in a first radio frequency band using the LTE radio. The device may then receive a request to establish a secondary transmission uplink in a second frequency band. Upon receiving the request, the device determines whether it can support concurrent use of the primary and secondary frequency bands while maintaining adequate receiver sensitivity. If the device cannot support such concurrent use, the device refuses the request. In addition, the device provides data indicating the degree by which certain performance parameters would be out-of-tolerance if the secondary connection were to be established.
