    Abstract: A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display device, a surface light source to irradiate illumination light toward the display device, and an optical member to reflect linearly polarized light having a light-vibration plane parallel to its reflection axis and to transmit linearly polarized light having a light-vibration plane parallel to its transmission axis. The display device includes a pair of substrates facing each other through a gap, a liquid crystal layer sealed into the gap between the substrates, and a pair of polarizing plates sandwiching the substrates therebetween. The substrates include electrodes formed on one of their facing surfaces. The optical member is arranged between the display device and the light source so that the reflection axis faces a direction crossing an absorption axis of the polarizing plate arranged between the display device and the light source at an angle falling within the 15° to 90° range.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal display device has an opposing substrate on which an opposing electrode is formed, a TFT substrate on which pixel electrodes arranged in matrix, thin film transistors connected to the pixel electrodes respectively, and gate lines and data lines for the thin film transistors are formed, vertical alignment films formed on the opposing inner surfaces of these substrates, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the vertical alignment films and having negative dielectric anisotropy. Each pixel electrode has a slit formed for separating each pixel into a plurality of sub-pixels by partially eliminating the pixel electrode with a connecting portion left at which adjoining electrode portions of each pixel electrode is connected with each other. The width W1 of the pixel electrode that runs in a direction in which the slit is formed and width W2 of the connecting portion have a ratio W2/W1 of 0.13 or lower.

    Abstract: A collet portion including a cup-shaped collet is fixed to an upper end of a vertically movable body vertically movable relative to a connecting portion to which upper ends of the legs of a tripod assembly are pivotally coupled. The collet is flexible and is formed with plural slits extending radially. The collet receives a semispherical bowl leveler as making contact with a semispherical surface of the bowl leveler at a cup-shaped inside surface thereof. The bowl leveler is combined with the collet portion by means of a bolt and is free to tilt back/forth and sideways as guided by the collet. An upper end portion of the vertically movable body is provided with a collar at place outside the collet, the collar vertically movable relative to the vertically movable body. The collar includes an abutment portion on an inside surface thereof, the abutment portion capable of being abutted against an outside surface of the collet.
