  • Patent number: 4334042
Abstract: In the carbonylation of olefinic compounds in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst, the addition to the reaction system of a secondary phosphine oxide represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and each is substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon residue having not more than about 20 carbon atoms, in an amount of 0.2 to 20 moles per gram atom of the cobalt makes it possible to separate the reaction product from the reaction mixture by direct distillation without any such special operation for the catalyst separation as required in the conventional processes. The distillation residue which contains the catalyst can be recycled for the reuse thereof in the carbonylation.

  • Patent number: 4238419
Abstract: Rhodium catalyzed hydroformylation of olefinic compounds is essentially effected in the presence of a secondary phosphine oxide of the general formula (I) in an amount of at least one mole per gram atom of rhodium, which supresses the thermal degradation of the rhodium catalyst in the hydroformylation stage as well as in the distillation of the reaction products: ##STR1## wherein, in the formula (I), R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different, substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon residues containing not more than 20 carbon atoms. The phosphine oxide of the general formula (I) maintains the catalytic activity over a prolonged period of time and prevents essentially metallic rhodium from sticking to the vessel during distillation of the reaction products from the reaction mixture, and consequently makes recycle of the catalyst easier and enables lowering the hydroformylation pressure.

  • Patent number: 4215077
Abstract: Hydroformylation of olefins is effected in an organic solvent in the presence of a rhodium complex and a trisubstituted phosphine to give the corresponding aldehydes. Addition of a diphosphinoalkane of the general formula ##STR1## wherein, in the formula, A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are each aryl, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each aryl or saturated hydrocarbon residues containing one or more carbon atoms, and Z is an alkylene radical whose principal chain contains 2 to 5 carbon atoms and optionally may have one or more lower alkyl substituents, to the hydroformylation reaction system in an amount of 0.20 to 2.5 equivalents per gram atom of the rhodium contained in the rhodium complex markedly prolongs the life of the rhodium catalyst.
