  • Patent number: 8751453
Abstract: Various methods and systems for using email to convey backup and restore data are disclosed. One method involves: receiving a request to perform a backup system operation; generating an email that includes data and metadata (which is associated with the data); and sending the email to an email address associated with a backup system component. The request can be a backup request, in which case the data includes data to be backed up, and the backup system component is a backup server. Alternatively, the request can be receiving a restore request. In this scenario, the data includes data to be restored, and the backup system component is a backup client.

  • Patent number: 8709539
Abstract: A process and an apparatus for producing a composite material utilize a rotatable hollow body that is inclined with an upstream side being higher than a downstream side. A reaction zone is defined within an elongated chamber in the hollow body. Protrusions inwardly extend from an inner peripheral wall of the hollow body adjacent to the reaction zone. Base material is input into the chamber via a base material introduction port and a carbon source vapor is input into the chamber via a carbon source supply port. A heater heats the reaction zone to a temperature at which carbon nanotubes form on the base material from the carbon source vapor. The protrusions catch base material disposed on the inner peripheral wall of the hollow body when the hollow body rotates and then drop the base material through the reaction zone so that the base material contacts the carbon source vapor.

  • Patent number: 8694538
Abstract: A method and apparatus for logging write requests to a storage volume in a network data switch is described. In one example, a switch component in a switch receives a write request from a host server. The write request is associated with a destination in the storage volume. A logging element is identified that is associated with the destination of the write request. The logging element may be a switch component in the switch (e.g., a virtualization card), or may be dedicated logging circuitry in the switch. The identified logging element then logs a write intent for the destination in a log.

  • Patent number: 8443119
Abstract: Auto-trespass can be at least temporarily disabled subsequent to an automatic failover. The automatic failover exchanges roles between an active path and a passive path, such that the passive path becomes the active path and vice versa. By disabling auto-trespass, hosts that are unaware that the automatic failover has occurred will not trigger another failover when those hosts attempt to perform I/O operations via the formerly-active path. This can reduce performance decreases that would otherwise occur due to the active role being traded in a “ping-pong” manner between the paths.

  • Patent number: 7721282
Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is directed to a system for distributing an application environment to a compute node. The system includes a first storage unit for storing blocks of a root image of the compute node and a second storage unit for storing a leaf image comprising new data blocks and changes to the blocks of the root image. The system further includes a union block device for interfacing between the compute node and the first and second storage units to distribute the application environment to the compute node. The union block device creates the application environment by merging the blocks of the root image stored on the first storage unit with the leaf image stored on the second storage unit.

  • Patent number: 7689803
Abstract: A system for communication using emulated LUN blocks in storage virtualization environments includes a first host and an off-host virtualizer. The off-host virtualizer may be configured to generate operating system metadata for a virtual storage device, and to make the operating system metadata accessible to the first host. A first layer of a storage software stack at the host may use the operating system metadata to detect the existence of the virtual storage device as an addressable storage device. The off-host virtualizer may also be configured to provide configuration information at a designated set of block addresses within the virtual storage device. A second layer of the storage software stack may be configured to read the configuration information from the designated set of blocks.
