  • Patent number: 6836370
Abstract: An optical collimator is provided for ready fitting to an optical device with precise optical alignment, to obviate the need for adjusting the collimator during assembly to the optical device to compensate for a translational offset and an angular deviation. In an embodiment, the collimator has a sleeve with an outer cylindrical surface that is concentric with the output optical path, which has a translational offset and an angular deviation with respect to the collimator axis. A method is provided for making such a collimator for ready fitting to an optical device with precise optical alignment. In an embodiment, a portion of an outer sleeve of the collimator is removed according to the offset and the deviation to form an outer cylindrical surface that is centered about an axis which coincides with the optical path emanating from the collimator, to allow the collimator to be readily fitted to an optical device.

  • Publication number: 20040252941
Abstract: A micro-optic fiber device is provided with independent counter-bore tubes and coupling tubes served as couplers for coupling the optical processing elements, micro lenses and the fiber pigtails. The micro-optic fiber device can be built using direct coupling manner. Wherein the optical processing element is firstly inserted in the step groove of the counter-bore tube using bonding agent, and then coupled with the coupling tubes, such as to prevent the bonding agent from diffusing and spreading over the optical path of the optical processing element as well as the micro lenses.

  • Publication number: 20020181824
Abstract: An apparatus and method for splitting and combining optical beams. The apparatus comprises a pair of closely-spaced optical fibers that propagate optical beams through a first lens element that collimates both beams. An adjoining, a polarizing beam splitter element, typically in the form of a birefringent crystal or birefringent crystal assembly, then combines the optical beams. The combined optical beam then propagates through a second lens element which focuses the optical beam into an adjoining single optical fiber. The apparatus is configured to be compact and linear. By using a less-than quarter pitch first lens disposed adjacent a polarizing beam splitter element, focusing of the preferred embodiment of the present invention is less critical than with other combiner configurations.

  • Patent number: 6421471
Abstract: An optical depolarizer and method of depolarizing light is described. An input light beam is split into two beams. One split beam is recirculated through a birefringent medium and looped back to be recombined with the input light. This allows a weighted averaging of the different polarization states that result from birefringence in the recirculation path of the recirculated beam. The depolarizer is formed from single mode fiber optic cables and fused single mode fiber couplers. Each fiber coupler has an input pair of fibers and an output pair of fibers. One of the output fibers is coupled to one of the input fibers to form a recirculation loop. Additionally, polarization controllers provided in the input fiber and recirculation loop allow the degree of polarization of the output beam to be varied across a wide spectrum of values.
