  • Patent number: 5730700
Abstract: An obturator for measuring incident light in a remote situs such as a body cavity which includes a treatment tubular member through which light is delivered to the remote situs and one or more auxiliary tubular members through which incident light in the remote situs is transmitted to an external light detector. The treatment and auxiliary tubular members are attached to a connector element which is in turn connected to a cystoscope lens port. The treatment and auxiliary tubular members are aligned off-center with respect to the central axis of the obturator so that a cystoscope lens can be inserted in the lens port and pass through the axial center of the obturator. Each auxiliary tubular member receives incident light from a different portion of the remote situs. The apparatus is particularly useful for conducting phototherapy in body cavities and has been demonstrated in the phototherapy treatment of superficial cancer in the bladder.

  • Patent number: 5728881
Abstract: A process is provided for preparing 2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine from 4-chlorotrifluoromethylbenzene. The process includes a two stage nitration and an amination step. Ethylene dichloride is utilized as a diluent and solvent in the nitration steps. Spent acid from the first nitration is reconstituted with sulfur trioxide for use in the second nitration. Spent acid from the second nitration is used directly in the first nitration and evaporation is used to remove nitrosoamines from the final trifluralin product.

  • Patent number: 5519534
Abstract: A irradiation attachment for an optical fiber which provides an output of light that has a highly uniform intensity. The device includes a hollow spherical shell having a diffusive reflective surface or target supported therein. Light is directed into the hollow spherical shell so that it reflects off the diffusive reflective surface or target. The reflected light is internally reflected off the inner surface of the hollow spherical shell several times before passing through an output aperture. As a result of the internal reflection within the hollow spherical shell, the light leaving the device has a highly uniform intensity. The device is particularly useful for photodynamic therapy.

  • Patent number: 5435307
Abstract: A method of optimizing photodynamic therapy in which retained concentrations of photosensitizers administered are measured on a real time basis by percutaneous measurements of fluorescence. A light weight hand held fluorometer is used to percutaneously measure fluorescence emitted by photosensitizers in a tissue situs that is subject to photodynamic therapy. The use of real time determinations of the concentration of photosensitizers allow optimization of illumination intensity and duration.

  • Patent number: 5401820
Abstract: In one embodiment of this invention a surface silicated alumina composition, as opposed to conventional silica alumina, is provided. Such composition may also be fluorided and/or phosphated or phosphited. The resulting compositions are broadly useful but are of particular applicability as supports for chromium olefin polymerization catalysts. In another aspect alumina is fluorided and used with hexavalent chromium catalyst and a co-catalyst or in the alternative with an organochromium catalyst. If desired the support in this embodiment can also be phosphated or phosphited. In another embodiment, aluminum phosphate is formed in the pores of alumina. In contrast with alumina catalyst supports of the prior art, the supports of this invention allow for the production of olefin polymers at high rates of productivity. Also novel high density ultrahigh molecular weight polymers are produced.

  • Patent number: 5210380
Abstract: Disclosed herein are position determining apparatus and conductor structures or grids therefor. The conductor structure for each axis includes a number of conductors which are run in a serpentine-type path each with uniform repeat increment. The repeat increment, which is the spacing or span between one run and the next of the same serpentine-type conductor, are uniform for each conductor (but may change from conductor to conductor) and is constrained by a maximum repeat increment, or a minimum repeat increment. In the preferred embodiments, there is at least a constraint on the maximum repeat increment to provide noise immunity. The conductors are arranged for each axis of the grid in a pattern such that signals obtained for that axis may be processed to provide binary numbers in a Gray-type code each unique to a small region of the active area in which the coil center is located.

  • Patent number: 5210161
Abstract: A vanadium dichloride-ether complex is carried on a porous support. This complex can be produced by either forming VCl.sub.2 and thereafter complexing the material with an ether or forming an ether complex with VCl.sub.4 or VCl.sub.3 and thereafter reducing the vanadium compound to VCl.sub.2. It is also possible to carry out the complexing reaction and the reduction essentially simultaneously. The resulting catalyst in combination with a cocatalyst is capable of giving high activity in olefin polymerization and demonstrates good sensitivity to molecular weight control agents, thus allowing the production of a broad spectrum of polymers so far as molecular weight is concerned.

  • Patent number: 5104839
Abstract: Olefinic polymer exhibiting high environmental stress crack resistance are produced by contacting the olefin charge stock in a single reactor with a compatible mix of two transition metal catalyst systems. One component of the catalyst system comprises chromium oxide supported on an aluminophosphate material. Hydrogen can be used as adjuvant for the hexavalent chromium component of the catalyst mixture. The second catalyst component consists essentially of a beta-stabilized tetrahydrocarbyl zirconium compound supported on inorganic support material. The catalysts can be premixed before use in the reactor, or can be added to the reactor separately. A suitable cocatalyst can be utilized.
