  • Patent number: 7072656
Abstract: In a radio access network (14) comprising a serving radio network control node (261) and a drift radio network control node (262), a determination is first made that a target cell controlled by the drift radio network control node should be prepared for handover with respect to a user equipment unit (30). The target cell is neighbored by a set of neighboring cells, the set of neighboring cells including a first subset of neighboring cells and a second subset of neighboring cells, a handover involving the user equipment unit being permitted for a cell of the first subset but not for a cell of the second subset. In accordance with the determination, a message including a filtered list of cells is sent to the user equipment unit, the filtered list of cells including the first subset but not the second subset. The filtered list of cells can comprise, for example, a list of cells for whose frequencies the user equipment unit is to perform measurements.

  • Patent number: 7072329
Abstract: In a multi-layer telecommunications system which includes an application layer and a transport layer, differing transport technologies are interworked without terminating the application layer signaling or without involving a technology interworking in the control plane of the application layer (e.g., without interworking in the application signaling). In various illustrated embodiments, the application layer is a radio network layer of a wireless telecommunications system. In at least some embodiments of the present invention a transport layer interworking function is situated on an interface between two nodes of the radio access network (RAN). The interworking function can be located in a separate node which may be a node having both ATM and internet protocol (IP) interfaces. There are numerous modes of implementing the interworking of the present invention, regardless of which interface is affected (e.g., an Iur interface, an Iu interface, or an Iub interface).

  • Publication number: 20050221849
Abstract: In a radio access network (RAN) where information may be sent to a mobile radio unit using a shared radio channel shared by other mobile radio units, a first transport bearer is established between a first RAN node, e.g., a drift RNC, and a second RAN node, e.g., a base station, to transport data to be transmitted on the shared radio channel. A second transport bearer is established between the first and second RAN nodes to transport control information originated in the first RAN node that relates to the first transport bearer data. The first RAN node then transmits the control information over the second transport bearer to the second RAIN node. The control information might include, for example, scheduling information known to the first RAN node because the first RAN node supervises scheduling of data to be transmitted on the shared radio channel. The control information may provide to the mobile radio unit information needed to decode the data transmitted on the shared radio channel.

  • Patent number: 6889050
Abstract: A connection is supported in a radio access network (RAN) between an external network to a UE using a first RAN node and second RAN node. The transmission rate from the first RAN node to the second RAN node is regulated based on a rate control request from the second RAN node. In one example embodiment, the first and second RAN nodes correspond to a serving radio network controller and a drift radio network controller, respectively. In another example embodiment, the first and second RAN nodes correspond to a radio network controller and radio base station, respectively. The rate control request is made based upon a congestion or load condition being monitored by the second RAN node. When the load condition is detected, the second RAN node requests the first RAN node to lower the transmission rate of information. Conversely, when the load condition is relieved, the second RAN node can request that the first RAN node increase the transmission rate of information.

  • Publication number: 20040157600
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for determining whether to grant access of a user equipment (UE) to a radio access network in a present position of the user equipment (UE) within a communications system. The communications system comprises a control node (N1, N2) handling services for the user equipment (UE) and an access node (AN1, AN2) controlling the access network. The method is initiated by receiving a request for service processing for the user equipment (UE) in the control node (N1, N2) with an identification of the user equipment (UE). A subscriber group information is determined for the user equipment (UE) according to the identification of the user equipment and sent to the access node (AN1, AN2). Furthermore, an area access information according to the present location of the user equipment (UE) is determined in the access node (AN1, AN2).

  • Patent number: 6724813
Abstract: In a communications system, communications resources are allocated in a dynamic, “as needed” fashion. No explicit signaling is needed to exchange information pertaining specifically to an allocated communications resource. Instead, resources are implicitly allocated by using one or more parameters known to both the radio access network and mobile station that are more or less unique to the mobile station. Such parameters are used to generate or address a communications resource for use by the mobile station. The parameters might, for example, be information readily acquired or communicated as a result of a synchronization procedure, a mobile station registration procedure, a mobile station access procedure, a paging procedure, etc.

  • Patent number: 6597679
Abstract: A telecommunications system employing WCDMA technology in a preferred embodiment, utilizes compressed mode techniques to allow a mobile station to take measurements on another frequency in preparation for inter-frequency transfer. The current assumption is that the compressed mode characteristics are controlled by the network, but such control leads to problems when one considers that the slot characteristics are very dependent upon the mobile station characteristics. In the present invention, the control of the slot specifications are dictated by the mobile station to the network and acknowledged by the network to the mobile station. Thereafter, the network informs the WCDMA base station of the slot specifications, which are then imposed from the CDMA base station to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6480476
Abstract: A sleep cycle of a mobile station may be optimally varied depending upon one or more conditions relating to the mobile station's operation. Based on one or more of those conditions, a variable wake up parameter is determined and used to establish times when the mobile station automatically leaves a lower power mode and enters a higher power mode to listen for a page. The mobile station's variable wake up parameter is provided to a radio access network and to one or more core networks to permit coordination of communications and services with the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6131030
Abstract: A system network and method improving handovers, particularly for reducing the amount of inter-cellular transfer information stored in base station controllers or radio network controllers, is disclosed. Instead of storing routing information for every possible inter-cellular handover at each control node, signaling network technology is employed to effectuate communication of all relevant inter-cellular handover information between all of the control nodes, thereby coordinating routing information transference across a distributed system.

  • Patent number: 5953325
Abstract: A DS-CDMA cellular system is provided that employs two forward link transmission modes in parallel. A conventional transmission mode broadcasts a pilot channel that can be used by a conventional mobile station to estimate and detect a dedicated traffic channel. The second transmission mode transmits (via a sectorized or narrow lobe antenna system) all information required by a new generation mobile station to estimate and detect a traffic channel dedicated to that mobile station. Consequently, DS-CDMA system operators can introduce the use of adaptive array antenna systems or distributed antenna systems with new generation mobile stations, without terminating the use of the conventional mobile stations.

  • Patent number: 5946630
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring a short message between an originating mobile station and the short message service center permanently associated with the destination mobile station is disclosed. The originating mobile station sends the short message (including the address of the destination mobile station) to the mobile network over an air interface. The mobile network transfers the short message internally between switching nodes. One of the switching nodes interrogates a subscriber database, and passes the mobile station's address to the database, and passes the information showing that this is a short message submitted from a mobile station. The database checks to determine if the destination mobile station is short message service capable. If not, the short message is terminated. Otherwise, the database returns the address of the short message service center permanently associated with the destination mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5878397
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transporting a short message between a subscriber terminal and a digital telecommunications system is disclosed. A short message including user information and control data is created at the subscriber terminal. The short message user information is inserted into a user information field in a call setup message, in accordance with a standard call control protocol. A predetermined code is inserted into a locking shift field in the call setup message, which creates a short message control data field in the call setup message. The short message control data is inserted into the short message control data field in the call setup message, and the call setup message is transported between the subscriber terminal and the system. Also, a method and apparatus for transporting the short message between the digital telecommunications system and a short message service center is disclosed.
