  • Patent number: 7194439
Abstract: A job accounting and chargeback system for software products is comprised of a software license manager in the form of a software product use monitoring subsystem that handles requests for and grants rights to use software products, in such a manner that chargeback data is developed, which is then referenced to entities that are charged for the use of the software products. To better correlate the chargeback data with the use of software products, the chargeback data is referenced to the actual amount and type of use of software products being used, rather than on the use of computer facilities.

  • Publication number: 20060206813
Abstract: The present invention ensures that content provided in formatted print pages is current, and can provide a convenient user interface to identify portions of a display screen to monitor for changes in content. Alternatively, the invention can monitor data storage locations for changes in content, or be informed by a contact provider of changes in content. Moreover, the invention preferably registers a flag or other setting when a change is recognized, and can further automatically take action based upon an evaluation of the change. Alternatively, a website (or other course material provided on a communication network) is automatically displayed for a user to determine whether any actions are warranted. Thus, changes in content are, preferably, regularly monitored and registered.

  • Publication number: 20060161782
Abstract: A system and method for automatically or semi-automatically controlling the printing of materials that consume expensive expendable resources. A software program is installed on an individual's personal computer or workstation, on any computer on a network, on a printer server, or on the computer controlling a printer. The software program intercepts print requests directed to the individual's personal printer, to any printer attached to the network, to the printer controlled by the particular computer, or to any set of user-specified printers. Based on default or user-specifiable criteria, the software program evaluates the file representing the document to be printed and determines whether the document is allowed to be printed by the originally intended printer or whether it is redirected to another printer, a central site or cancelled.

  • Publication number: 20060041839
Abstract: In one embodiment, the invention regards a method for providing formatted print pages of electronic material in response to a request initiated by a user. The method includes providing to the user a virtual document that includes at least one formatting instruction which affects the appearance of the virtual document. Further, an electronic request is received from the user for the formatted print pages, and the electronic request includes electronic order information, and the formatted print pages are based on the virtual document. The electronic order information is preferably processed to provide electronic production information that represents instructions for fulfilling the request. The electronic production information is preferably transmitted to a fulfillment facility, generating the formatted print pages by the fulfillment facility and providing the formatted print pages to the user from the fulfillment facility.

  • Publication number: 20060005030
Abstract: The present invention improves the way information related to copyright of electronic content, such as virtual documents and corresponding formatted print pages is received, managed, and distributed. A database is preferably provided that stores information regarding electronic content, such as virtual documents, formatted print pages, and related copyright information. Preferably, information regarding a virtual document is correlated with related information in the database, such as regarding a copyright holder. Other information about the virtual document, such as a copyright arrangement for the particular document, payment due information, or the like, is similarly related to virtual documents.

  • Publication number: 20050193032
Abstract: A process is provided for facilitating the migrating of a user's overall software environment from a first computer to a second computer. The process includes enhancing the operating system on the computer or adding additional functionality to the original and new computers such that software products are identified and their subsequent operation tracked. This tracking operation is used to identify user data files and other files, settings and data which might be potentially moved to the new computer. The method then causes the appropriate programs, settings and files to be packed and moved. The files and programs are unpacked, and the new computer is ready for use such that its appearance and operating environment are identical to that of the original computer.
