  • Publication number: 20150055084
Abstract: The present invention provides a deformable membrane assembly 1 comprising an elastic membrane 8 that is held under tension around its edge by a bendable membrane supporting member 2,10, a body of fluid in contact with one face of the membrane, the pressure of the fluid being controllable for adjusting the shape of the membrane, and one or more bending controllers 24 acting on the supporting member 2, 10 to control the bending of the supporting member in response to loading through tension in the membrane. The bending stiffness of the membrane-supporting member 2, 10 varies round its extent to control the profile of the edge of the membrane 8; etc. upon actuation. A variety of different types of bending controllers are disclosed which permit out-of-plane bending of the supporting member 2, 10 but prevent or control in-plane bending or deformation of the supporting member.

  • Patent number: 7834501
Abstract: A bearing assembly particularly suitable for the rotor arrangement of an electrical motor or generator includes a bearing located in a housing. The bearing has an inner race, an outer race, and a plurality of ball bearings between the inner and outer races. A portion of the housing is made up of a deformable flexible wall which permits the housing to conform to the shape of the outer race member, rather than forcing the outer race to conform to the shape of the housing, as was experienced hitherto.

  • Patent number: 7786628
Abstract: A rotor assembly for an electronic machine such as a motor includes a rotor on a shaft having a bearing at each end portion, the bearings being arranged to rotatably support the rotor and shaft. The assembly further includes a balancing member, from which material may be removed for balancing the rotor assembly. The balancing member is located in a predetermined position and orientation with respect to the rotor. The balancing member includes an encoder disk, arranged to permit positioning of the rotor with respect to a stator. The provision of a balancing member having an integral encoder disk facilitates the manufacture of the rotor assembly. As the balancing member is located in a predetermined position, the encoder automatically assumes a predetermined position and hence the position of the rotor can be determined with certainty.

  • Publication number: 20100215485
Abstract: A centrifugal compressor that includes an impeller, a diffuser and a shroud. One of the diffuser and shroud includes a plurality of recesses and the other of the diffuser and shroud includes a plurality of radial vanes. The shroud covers the impeller and diffuser such that each radial vane projects into a respective recess.
