  • Publication number: 20060123252
Abstract: A disclosed method involves initializing a performance profiler of a processing system. The performance profiler may include performance profile parameters for a power management policy for the processing system. The method also involves retrieving performance metrics for the processing system from a performance monitoring unit (PMU) of the processing system, in response to a determination that performance details should be collected. A current performance state of the processing system may be determined, based at least in part on the performance profile parameters and the performance metrics from the PMU. The current performance state may then be communicated to a policy manager of the processing system. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

  • Patent number: 6594721
Abstract: A system is disclosed for allowing surprise insertion and removal of a peripheral device from the bays of a portable computer system. The peripheral device may be inserted or removed when the portable computer system is powered off, powered on, or in standby or sleep mode. The peripheral device may be any one of a multitude of devices corresponding to the IDE, ATAPI or FLOPPY standard. Insertion or removal of the device is operating system and BIOS independent. A constantly executing detection process determines when a peripheral device has been inserted into or removed from a bay. A multilevel device driver allows layered functionality and simplified interfacing between the operating system and computer system and peripheral hardware. Identification and configuration of the peripheral device is handled by a IDE/ATAPI bridge device driver that is capable of recognizing any IDE, ATAPI or FLOPPY device inserted into a bay.

  • Patent number: 6216192
Abstract: A system and method to permit access requests from a mezzanine bus through different bridges to perform in similar ways in disclosed. The access requests are serviced even if the bridges are configured differently, therefore allowing hardware and software management by allowing software to treat peripheral devices attached to different types of bridges as similar devices. Features of the peripheral devices, therefore, can be more effectively and more fully accessed by evading limitations of the addressing mode for one or more of the bridges.

  • Patent number: 6189050
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide a mechanism for a personal computer to allow the insertion and removal of devices to and from device ports without re-starting the operating system of the computer. Device drivers are pre-loaded during the start-up process of the computer system for devices that may be inserted in the system later. Upon detection of device insertion, a high priority thread process determines the type of device inserted and determines which pre-loaded device driver can operate the newly inserted device. The selected device driver is linked to the file system and is activated by signaling to the device driver or to the operating system of the existence of the newly inserted device. The operating system can then operate the inserted device. Upon device removal, device drivers for the removed device can be deactivated. The system also allows a docking station to have devices added or removed from device ports after the docking process has been completed.
