  • Patent number: 8872813
Abstract: An authoring tool assigns a first depth value to a first image layer and a second depth value to a second image layer. The first depth value is a first simulated distance from a user. The second depth value is a second simulated distance from the user. The authoring tool composes an image based on the first image layer and the second image layer such that the image is displayed within a page in a scrollable area on a viewing device. The first depth value is utilized to generate a first offset value from a first static position of the first image layer and the second depth value is utilized to generate a second offset value from a second static position of the second image layer based upon a scroll position of the page with respect to a target location in the scrollable area to create a parallax effect.

  • Publication number: 20140275240
Abstract: Combinations of betaine and vitamin C are used to suppress or prevent malignant tumors or to treat viruses, e.g., by combining the two ingredients in a product consumed by a human, dog, or cat, such as an aqueous liquid such as grape juice, the ingredients being provided in containers with instructions for use, or in finished products, especially with support of tests demonstrating the effectiveness of the treatment for, e.g., preventing tumors in populations known to be at risk of developing tumors, or, treating existing cancers in combination with other cancer drugs such as anastrozole and/or fulvestrant and/or artemisinin either concurrently or sequentially to prevent the cancer from growing when the cancer drug is not being used, or in the treatment of viruses.

  • Publication number: 20140271156
Abstract: Pocket and cup sails formed from flexible materials, especially such sails formed with excess material, have spar like supports attached at their deepest point to maintain the depth of the said sails when the wind fills them so that the sails expand to maximize resistance to the wind coming into the openings of the sails and so that the sails deflate when the wind is coming from the back of the sails to minimize resistance to the wind, the said sails being attached to rotor arms on rotary devices to provide torque, the torque being used to rotate decorative structures including the sails themselves, generate electricity, bring airplane tires up to speed before landing, and/or measure wind speed, and sails optionally having cuffs on the inside to help the sails inflate and/or maintain inflation by minimizing spillage of air.

  • Publication number: 20140264020
Abstract: A sight attachable to a weapon and comprising an objective lens, an image display, and a digital reticle. The objective lens focuses infrared light received from a scene onto a thermal imager, which is comprised of a focal plane array that detects infrared radiation in the scene focused by the lens. The image display is in signal communication with the thermal imager and provides an image of the received infrared light from the scene. The image rendered by the display is visible to the user. The digital reticle is rendered on the display and provides an aim point of the weapon upon a target in the scene. The image of the scene and superimposed reticle are directly viewable by a user with the aim point of the weapon upon the target being maintained constant over a range of viewing angles that depart from a viewing angle perpendicular to the display.

  • Publication number: 20140259977
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a sustainable building system (SBS) that is affordable, capable of being replicated at a small and large scale, significantly reduces both the heating and cooling loads of the building as well as the total energy that the building consumes. Energy consumption can be reduced sufficiently that the building is capable of net-zero-energy status. That is, a building made using the system, method and components described herein can, with the inclusion of appropriate renewable energy technologies, generate on site all the energy that the building needs. Specific to this SBS is the design of a super-insulated and nearly air-tight building thermal envelop, that is, to the greatest extent possible, thermal-bridge-free and that has incorporated into that envelope high performance windows and doors.

  • Publication number: 20140007090
Abstract: Probes are instrumented in multiple software modules of a computer system having virtual machines running therein and executed in a coordinated manner. An output of one probe may be used to conditionally trigger another probe so that the precision of collected data may be improved. In addition, outputs of probes that are triggered in different software modules by related events may be synchronized and analyzed collectively. Probes also may be parallel processed in different processors so that multiple probes can be processed concurrently.

  • Patent number: 8448244
Abstract: Embodiments allow for use of fused files that comprise executable code and content data in a more user-friendly and flexible manner. For example, a fused file can include content data and application logic for editing the content data within the file. Security through the use of digital signatures can be supported, but with at least part of a file recognized as extensible so that the file can be edited without “breaking” the signature. Additionally, a computing device can be configured to utilize a “sandbox” environment so that extensible (and/or other) portions of a fused file do not introduce unacceptable security issues even if the digital signature is valid. In some embodiments, the support of extensibility and sandboxing allows a runtime environment to utilize installer-free operation, which can represent a significant advantage in that fused files can be widely distributed to any device utilizing the runtime environment.

  • Patent number: 8287651
Abstract: A process for the production of ethanol from biomass is disclosed. The process relates to the pretreatment of corncob biomass and includes the steps of exposing corncob to steam in a reaction vessel at an elevated temperature and reaction pressure for a preselected exposure time. Volatile compounds are continuously vented during pretreatment. The reaction pressure is released for explosive decomposition of the corncob biomass into fibrous solids and condensate. The exposure is preferably carried out at a temperature of 190-210° C. and a pressure of 190 psig to 275 psig and an exposure time of 3 to 10 minutes.

  • Patent number: 8033336
Abstract: An apparatus and corresponding method of use extracts, cools, and transports effluents from subterranean, sub-sea oil formations to distant shore based processing facilities. The effluents, mostly crude oil, are conveyed rapidly to a cold flow generator near the oil wellhead on the sea bottom using the cold seawater to chill the effluents to a dispersed mixture including generated solids. The mixture is transported close to sea bottom temperatures, slowly, with small pressure drops, in low-cost submerged bare pipes over long distances to on or near shore processing facilities that can produce useful hydrocarbon products more cost effectively than at sea processing facilities. The apparatus eliminates or minimizes the need for heated or insulated pipe, the need for large floating processing structures, the need for sub-sea processing equipment, and/or the need for chemical additions to production flow.

  • Publication number: 20110055946
Abstract: The subject invention relates in part to the discovery of a spontaneous sunflower mutation. The subject invention involves an ‘early’ mutation and related inbred/hybrid development. The subject invention further provides a single dominant gene that confers earliness in sunflower inbred isolines and near isogenic hybrids. There is no known prior teaching or suggestion of this gene's utility for hybrid development in the industry. The subject indention also provides a new and distinctive sunflower inbred line designated H 120R. The invention includes seeds that possess this mutated gene, plants produced by growing these seeds, and progeny thereof that possess this mutated gene and the associated earliness trait. The subject invention also includes methods for producing such sunflower seeds and plants, including inbreds and hybrids. Such plants can be produced by, for example, crossing such an inbred line with itself or with another sunflower line.

  • Patent number: 7780204
Abstract: An electromechanical push to close latch has a pawl positioned for linear movement in a housing, with the pawl being biased to the outward extended position. An electric motor operates a cam to change the position of the pawl thereby retracting it into the housing. An electronic circuit board controls the operation of the electric motor under the direction of an outside control signal. The circuit board also senses the position of the pawl to stop the operation of the motor when the pawl is fully retracted. The pawl mounting can be reconfigured for the pawl to extend and thereby operate in a plurality of selectable directions.
