  • Patent number: 10710920
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a method for thermally treating glass articles may include holding a glass article at a treatment temperature equal to an annealing temperature of the glass article ±15° C. for a holding time greater than or equal to 5 minutes. Thereafter, the glass article may be cooled from the treatment temperature through a strain point of the glass article at a first cooling rate CR1 less than 0° C./min and greater than ?20° C./min such that a density of the glass article is greater than or equal to 0.003 g/cc after cooling. The glass article is subsequently cooled from below the strain point at a second cooling rate CR2, wherein |CR2|>|CR1|.

  • Patent number: 10669196
Abstract: Methods for increasing the hydrolytic resistance of a glass article are disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method includes providing a glass article with a pre-treatment hydrolytic titration value. Thereafter, the glass article is thermally treated at a treatment temperature greater than a temperature 200 C less than a strain temperature of the glass article for a treatment time greater than or equal to about 0.25 hours such that, after thermally treating the glass article, the glass article has a post-treatment hydrolytic titration value that is less than the pre-treatment hydrolytic titration value.

  • Patent number: 10495530
Abstract: Prism coupling systems and methods for characterizing curved parts are disclosed. A coupling surface of a coupling prism is interfaced to the curved outer surface of the curved part to define a coupling interface. Measurement light is directed through the coupling prism and to the interface, wherein the measurement light has a width of 3 mm or less. TE and TM mode spectra reflected from the interface are digitally captured. These mode spectra are processed to determine at least one characteristic of the curved part, such as the stress profile, compressive stress, depth of layer, refractive index profile and birefringence.

  • Patent number: 10350139
Abstract: A sterile glass pharmaceutical container or vessel such as, but not limited to, vials for holding pharmaceutical products or vaccines in a hermetic and/or sterile state. The sterile glass pharmaceutical container undergoes a strengthening process that produces compression at the surface and tension within the container wall. The strengthening process is designed such that the tension within the wall is great enough to ensure catastrophic failure of the pharmaceutical container, thus rendering the product unusable, should sterility be compromised by a through-wall crack. The tension is greater than a threshold central tension, above which catastrophic failure of the pharmaceutical container is guaranteed, thus eliminating any potential for violation of pharmaceutical integrity or sterility (such as stable cracks) in the glass packaging which are not easily identifiable in an otherwise seemingly intact pharmaceutical container.

  • Publication number: 20190144322
Abstract: A method of making a glass sheet comprises laminating a high CTE core glass to a low CTE clad glass at high temperatures and allowing the laminate to cool creating compressive stress in the clad glass, and then ion exchanging the laminate to increase the compressive stress in the outer near surface regions of the clad glass. The core glass may include ions that exchange with ion in the clad glass to increase the compressive stress in inner surface regions of the clad glass adjacent to the clad glass/core glass interfaces. The glass laminate may be formed and laminated using a fusion forming and laminating process and fusion formable and ion exchangeable glass compositions.
