Publication number: 20050009681Abstract: A centrifugal separator provides for the discharge of solids by either an axial-motion scraper or a piston/extrusion assembly. The axial-motion scraper is used with hard-packed or friable solids, and includes an integral feed liquid accelerator and feed holes. The piston/extrusion assembly is used with pasty solids, and includes a piston extending into a separator bowl and having openings permitting fluid communication across the piston. After high-speed separation is complete, a centrate valve closes one end of the bowl, and the piston is moved axially in the bowl by an actuator. Accumulated solids are scraped from the sides of the bowl and extruded out of the piston openings for discharge from the bowl. A bowl suspension employs a spherical mounting structure and a short, stiff spindle. A spherical portion of a bearing housing is mounted in a spherical mounting region at one end of the separator, with a cylindrical portion of the bearing housing extending along the rotational axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2004Publication date: January 13, 2005Inventor: Robert Carr

Patent number: 6100779Abstract: The deflection unit has a yoke ring mounted on, and secured to, a coil assembly comprising deflection coils carried on a support. The yoke ring (22) is secured using a flow process in which the coil assembly is rotated about a vertical axis and flowable adhesive, e.g. polyurethane resin, is directed at one end (28) of the yoke ring such that the adhesive (30) flows over its outer surface (24) to its other end, forming a protective coating, and onto an adjacent part (20) of the coil assembly. The adhesive flows also over a substantial portion of the inner surface (23) of the yoke ring in the gap between the yoke ring and the coil assembly providing extensive bonding (32) between the yoke ring and the coil assembly which reduces unwanted noise effects from the unit in subsequent operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1998Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Stephen P. Patent number: 5347295Abstract: A notebook computer which is controlled by a stylus executing gestures on the computer screen. The stylus and the computer include complementary electronic circuitry by which the proximity of the stylus tip to the computer is sensed. The proximity sensing is used to detect to approach of the stylus tip to the computer screen, and gestural commands are then entered on the screen by moving the stylus. The entry of a command is terminated by removing the stylus tip from proximity with the screen, which is detected by the computer, which then implements the command. Alternative methods of implementing the commands include time-outs and command termination buttons.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1990Date of Patent: September 13, 1994Assignee: GO CorporationInventors: Todd Agulnick, Robert Carr, Tony Hoeber, S. Patent number: 4927268Abstract: Apparatus for optical analysis of particles such as biological cells utilizes twin beams passing through a common optical fibre to avoid problems of alignment. For scattering measurements, a narrower beam can be used to gate detection of a broader beam to avoid amiguities associated with off-axis particles. The twin beams can also be used for thermal lensing, fluorescence or other techniques. Different beam diameters can alternatively be achieved in a single beam by controlling the focal length of a beam focussing lens.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1988Date of Patent: May 22, 1990Assignee: Public Health Laboratory Service BoardInventors: Robert Carr, David J.
