  • Patent number: 6832301
Abstract: In a computing system having swappable and non-swappable address spaces, wherein the computing system includes an operating system that includes a Real Storage Manager (RSM), a Systems Resource Manager (SRM) and a Region Control Task (RCT), a method for recovering swappable fixed non-preferred memory is provided which includes receiving a request from the operating system to configure an area of real memory to create an intercepted swappable address space, wherein the intercepted swappable address space includes a flagged fixed frame element identified for configuration, examining the intercepted swappable address space so as to determine if the intercepted swappable address space will remain swappable, requesting the SRM to coordinate the swapping process, quiescing the intercepted address space, generating a first return code responsive to the intercepted swappable address space remaining swappable, communicating the first return code to the RCT so as to cause the RCT to respond to the first return code, in

  • Publication number: 20030127514
Abstract: Apparatus and method whereby a credit card sized high-memory card, composed of recordable storage media such as plastic or ceramic having a suitable recording medium inserted therein or placed thereon, can be inserted into an operative position adjacent to a rotating read/write head and the rotating head can be moved linearly relative to the high-memory card, while at the same time rotating, to permit the head to write data to or read data from the recording medium of the high-memory card. In the preferred embodiment, a high-memory card is fixed in position under a read/write head mounted in or on a holding assembly that can be rotated about its own axis. The read/write head assembly can then be moved incrementally, by stepper motor, voice coil actuator or other stepping device, in an arc, or linearly across the surface of the media, thus sweeping a recording path along the length of the high-memory card.

  • Publication number: 20030047611
Abstract: Apparatus and method wherein a credit card sized high-memory card, composed of a magnetic storage medium, or alternatively of a nonmagnetic material such as plastic having a suitable magnetic recording medium inserted therein or placed thereon, can be inserted into an operative position adjacent to a read/write head, and the head can be moved relative to the high-memory card to permit the head to write data to or read data from the magnetic recording medium of the high-memory card while the card is rotated. In the preferred embodiment, a disk-shaped platen is provided, with a shallow channel in its upper surface sufficiently wide to accept a high-memory card placed lengthwise therein, such that the upper surface of the card will be level with the upper surface of the platen, and the geometric center of the high-memory card will be centered directly over the rotational axis of the platen.

  • Publication number: 20020125316
Abstract: The apparatus includes a suitable enclosure or case, housing a tray or holder to receive and hold a high-memory card which may be formed of a recordable medium, or alternatively has inserted therein or placed thereon a magnetic or optical recordable medium on which data is recorded in the form of linear magnetic or optical recorded tracks. The card is held in place by card positioning pins and positioning springs. A linear head array can be caused to scan the card by a head array scanning motor driving a head array transportation wire. To precisely position the card with reference to the track positions or to move the card from one track of a track group to the next, the card tray may be moved orthogonaly stepped at right angles to the direction of travel of the linear head array assembly by a drive motor operating a lead screw and card tray leadscrew interface.

  • Publication number: 20020071212
Abstract: Small, easily transportable data storage cards in which the stored data is protected against external contamination. The structure of the cards provides two positions, a first position for sequestering the data, and a second position allowing physical access to the stored data during the writing and/or reading thereof.

  • Patent number: 5150472
Abstract: Page management mechanisms provide candidates for page stealing and prefetching from a main storage data cache of shared data when the jobs sharing the data are accessing it in a sequential manner. Pages are stolen behind the first reader in the cache, and thereafter at locations least likely to be soon re-referenced by trailing readers. A "clustering" of readers may be promoted to reduce I/O contention. Prefetching is carried out so that the pages most likely to be soon referenced by one of the readers are brought into the cache.
