Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and systems are provided to determine a response to a user submitted query based, at least in part, on a relationship between and/or among a plurality of terms of the query.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for providing a set of recommended annotations. A set of tags associated with a content item within a content sharing system is identified, where the content item is associated with a user of the content sharing system. A set of global tag co-occurrences within the content sharing system is identified for the set of tags, where each of the global tag co-occurrences in the set of global tag co-occurrences identifies a pair of tags including one of the set of tags, wherein the pair of tags have both been used together to tag at least one of the content items within the content sharing system. One or more sets of personal tag co-occurrences is identified for the set of tags, where each of the sets of personal tag co-occurrences is used in a corresponding one of one or more personal contexts of the content sharing system, the one or more personal contexts relating to the user of the content sharing system.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an ability to create segments of content, such as video, audio, multimedia, image, animation, interactive, etc. content, to associate metadata to each segment created, and to generate a summary of content comprising one or more segments using the metadata associated with the content segments. One or more acticons represented as icons in a user interface displayable to a user can be used to indicate a starting and/or ending point for a content segment. An acticon can represent an occurrence in the content, or a reaction of a user experiencing the content, for example.

Abstract: A method of providing in-context exploration of a query results web page, wherein the web page has at least one element and a plurality of query results, receives an indication of interest in the at least one element, and in response to the indication, emphasizes at least one query result relative to the plurality of query results.

Abstract: A search results page contains images that are organized based on the visual features of those images; images that have common visual features are grouped together using either a folding or a reciprocal election technique. Images that pertain to a particular meaning of a query term are less likely to be scattered across the page. A group of images that have common visual features is represented on the page by a single representative image from that group. Consequently, space for more representative images becomes available on the image search results page. Thus, search results page contains visually diverse representative images; space on the results page is not wasted by repeatedly showing the same image. The initial image search results page also therefore is more likely to contain representative images that otherwise would have occurred too far down a relevance-ranked list to be included within the initial search results page.

Abstract: This disclosure describes systems and methods for identifying and ranking relevant and diverse image search results in response to a query. An optimum set of features is identified for every query. The optimum set of features can be selected from a predefined set of features and can be selected based on a variance across features derived from an initial set of objects returned in response to the query. The optimum set of features can then be used to re-rank the initial set of objects or to search for a second set of objects and rank the second set of objects.

Abstract: Techniques are described to increase the diversity or focus of image search results. A user submits an original query to search for images. A server generates a first results set by executing the original query using metadata associated with each image. The server selects, from the first results set, a specified number of results ranked highest and generates a list of terms from the metadata of each of the results selected. The terms may be only the tags of the results. The server generates an updated query using terms in the list that may be weighted based on the frequency of the term in the list or include only a specified number of the highest occurring terms in the list. The server generates a second results set by executing the updated query using metadata associated with each image. The second results set is then stored and displayed to the user.

Abstract: An approach for responding to a text-based query for a digital image is provided. A request that identifies one or more keywords is received. A number of annotated digital images are selected. Each selected annotated digital image has a bounded region, on its appearance, that has an annotation associated with at least one of the keywords. A set of candidate digital images is selected for each annotated digital image. The set of candidate images, for a particular annotated digital image, are the digital images, of a set of digital images, which have an appearance that is most similar to the particular annotated digital image. The sets of candidate images are aggregated into a single set of digital images. A response is generated that identifies those digital images in the single set of digital images which are most responsive to the one or more keywords.

Abstract: An improved system and method for disambiguating text strings labeling content objects is provided. A text string set may be received from a user. Frequencies of co-occurring text strings in a text collection may be obtained, and a disambiguation measure may be determined for a pair of text strings that each co-occur with a text string in the text string set. The disambiguation measure may be based on a weighted KL divergence of text string distributions that maximizes the value of divergence when a text string set may occur in different contexts. A disambiguation measure may be determined for a list of the top most common pairs of text strings that co-occur with the text string set, and the pairs of text strings may be output in decreasing order by disambiguation measure for those pairs of text strings with a disambiguation measure that exceeds a threshold.

Abstract: A method of creating a word game comprising receiving a seed value from a browser, obtaining from a media database a plurality of words associated with the seed value, creating a word game from at least a subset of the obtained plurality of words, integrating the word game into a browser interpretable document, and, returning the browser interpretable document to the browser. Some embodiments further comprise incorporating into the browser interpretable document an advertisement associated with the seed value and/or at least one of the obtained plurality of words. Also disclosed is a system comprising a gaming server which receives a game request; a media server and media tag database; the gaming server requesting from the media server a set of media tags associated with a game seed value, building a word game using at least a subset of the media tags, and transmitting the word game.

Abstract: An improved system and method for classifying tags of content using a hyperlinked corpus of classified web pages is provided. An anchor text index may be searched to find anchor texts that may match text of the tag, documents referenced by the matching anchor texts may be found, and the documents referenced by the matching anchor texts may be grouped to disambiguate multiple classifications that result from matching the anchor texts with the categories of the reference documents. To resolve ambiguity between multiple classifications, weighted classifications may be used where each document may be assigned a positive weight for a mapping to a category to indicate the confidence of the classification of the document to the category. The classification for the grouping of the documents referenced by the matching anchor texts with greatest frequency may be selected and output as the classification for the tag.

Abstract: An improved system and method for visualizing and navigating a collection of tags labeling content in a user interface is provided. A visualization displaying a categorized subset of related tags may be generated in a user interface from a collection of tags labeling content items. One or more tags may be submitted in a query, a ranked list of related tags may be determined and clustered into categories, and then the clusters of related tags may be sent to a client device for display. A client device may display the categories and the related tags in each category and representative content items labeled by the related tags. The search space of a collection of tags may be refined by adding additional tags to a search query or may be expanded by removing tags from a search query, and an updated visualization may be generated for the requested search scope.

Abstract: A system and method for providing interactive advertisements and collecting data for an advertiser includes a processor, a storage unit in communication with the processor, and a memory unit in communication with the processor, wherein the memory unit contains instructions. The instructions configure the processor to upload sequential media to a central server, wherein the sequential media is an advertisement, provide at least one tag, wherein the at least one tag is a keyword related to a subject matter of the sequential media, and provide the sequential media to a game player via a web portal, wherein the web portal includes a input area for entering words from the game player related to the subject matter of the sequential media.

Abstract: The present invention is directed towards systems and methods for extending media annotations using collective knowledge. The method according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises receiving a plurality of content items and associated annotations. The method further normalizes the plurality of associated annotations and calculates pair frequencies for the plurality of associated annotations. The method then retrieves a plurality of alternative annotations and provides the plurality of alternative annotations.

Abstract: A computer-enabled method is provided for labeling at least one portion of a video with one or more tags. The method includes causing the video to be displayed to at least two users, including a first user and a second user, receiving a first tag from the first user at a first time, receiving a second tag from the second user at a second time, determining a time difference between the first and second times, associating the first tag with the video, and providing a first consideration to the first user in response to the first tag matching the second tag and the time difference being less than a predetermined value, wherein the first consideration is based upon the time difference. The first and second considerations may be inversely proportional to the time difference and may be points or other compensation.

Abstract: An ad matching system that includes an interactive client permits a triggering Web page author to provide feedback on a candidate advertisement for the page. Author feedback is used to rank ads for display on the triggering page. Preferably author feedback is also incorporated into ad clustering and/or ad ranking formulae within the system. Also, author credibility is judged based on author feedback and on click through rates of placed ads.

Abstract: A variety of computer based service that permit users to edit, compose, upload, or otherwise generate content also provide for the integration of sponsored media into presentations along with user-generated content. An exemplary service generates text based on user input, provides tags based on the text to a sponsored media repository, receives a sponsored media data structure in return, and formats sponsored media from the data structure for display to the user.
