  • Publication number: 20180365719
Abstract: A method of executing a double blind wine tasting event comprises providing a plurality of distinct wine bottles, a plurality of identical sleeves and a plurality of distinct covers. A first person places each of the wine bottles in a respective sleeve, with each of the sleeves including a respective distinct identifier. The first person keeps track of which wine bottle is placed in which sleeve. A second person then masks each of the identifiers with a respective cover, with each of the covers being removably attachable to the sleeves. The second person keeps track of which cover is masking which identifier. After these steps are carried out, a location of each of the wine bottles within the sleeves is unknown to every one of the participants. A plurality of carafes may be used as an alternative to the sleeves.

  • Patent number: 10145810
Abstract: A disclosed method for characterizing gas adsorption on a rock sample includes: measuring a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) response of the rock as a function of surrounding gas pressure along an isotherm; transforming the NMR response to obtain a Langmuir pressure distribution of gas adsorption on the rock sample; and displaying the Langmuir pressure distribution. The Langmuir pressure distribution may be shown in one dimension (e.g., contribution to signal response versus Langmuir pressure), or may be combined with additional pressure-dependencies such as spin-lattice relaxation time (T1), spin-spin relaxation time (T2), and chemical shift (?) to form a multi-dimensional distribution. The method can further include: identifying peaks in the Langmuir pressure distribution; and associating a gas storage mechanism and capacity with each peak.

  • Publication number: 20180280545
Abstract: Disclosed herein are iron oxide nanoparticles having an iron (II) content in a metastable state that is intermediate the iron (II) content of wüstite and magnetite. The disclosed iron oxide nanoparticles exhibit unexpectedly beneficial magnetic properties (e.g., saturation magnetization) resulting from both the size of the nanoparticles and the iron (II) content. Accordingly, the iron oxide nanoparticles are attractive for magnetic imaging applications, such as magnetic particle imaging. Methods of forming the iron oxide nanoparticles are also provided, such methods including a controlled oxidation step wherein a small amount (e.g., 1%) of gaseous oxygen is exposed to wüstite nanoparticles for a defined period of time sufficient to partially oxidize the wüstite but prevent conversion entirely to magnetite. Finally, methods of using the iron oxide nanoparticles are also provided. Representative methods include magnetic particle imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and hyperthermia.

  • Patent number: 9828954
Abstract: A fuel control system for an engine includes a closing module and a purge control module. The closing module commands closing of a purge valve in response an engine speed transitioning from greater than a predetermined speed to less than the predetermined speed while the purge valve is in an open state. The predetermined speed is less than a predetermined target speed of the engine and is greater than zero. The purge control module transitions the purge valve from the open state to a closed state in response to the command.

  • Patent number: 9797344
Abstract: A system according to the present disclosure includes a valve control module, a purge fraction module, and a diagnostic module. The valve control module opens a purge valve in an evaporative emissions system to allow purge vapor to flow to an intake system of an engine. The purge fraction module determines first and second fractions of purge vapor delivered to the engine relative to a total amount of air and purge vapor delivered to the engine based on first and second inputs, respectively. The first input is from a hydrocarbon sensor disposed in the evaporative emissions system of the engine. The second input is from an oxygen sensor disposed in an exhaust system of the engine. The diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in at least one of the evaporative emissions system and the hydrocarbon sensor based on the first and second purge fractions when the purge valve is open.
