  • Publication number: 20050064889
Abstract: The invention relates to the packet switched portion of a mobile communications system in which two or more network operators share the same network. To allow the operators to compete with each other, they usually have a gateway node (GGSN1, GGSN2) of their own, although they share the serving node (SGSN1). In order to enable the selection of the gateway node (GGSN1, GGSN2), the invention involves maintaining information about predefined partner networks, i.e. shared networks an operator has in addition to its own networks. On the basis of the information a mobile station (MS2) can be connected to a gateway node (GGSN2) of its home network (PLMN2), provided that the visited network (PLMN1) is a partner network of the home network (PLMN2). A visiting mobile station from outside the partner networks, however, can be connected to the visited gateway node (GGSN1).

  • Publication number: 20040243720
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, system and network element for providing an address transition if a connection point at one end of a connection is changed from a first network node to a second network node of a cellular network. An address information and at least one alternative address information are transmitted in a signaling message from said first network node to said second network node. One of said address information and said alternative address information is selected at the second network node and used for re-establishing said connection towards the other end of said connection. Thereby, the new point of connection is allowed to re-establish the connection towards the other end of the connection, even if it can only communicate using one of the two addresses. Furthermore, signaling messages, e.g. messages relating to charging, lawful interception, and/or customized applications, received from different network nodes can be correlated based on the alternative addresses.

  • Publication number: 20040047437
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a communication system comprising first network element, e.g. portable terminal, connectable to a second network element. One of selectable modes is used for communication. A network element is adapted to perform a mode selection procedure for selecting the same mode for bidirectional communication between the network elements. The mode selection ensures the use of one and the same mode in uplink and downlink direction and thus enables e.g. IP telephony in UMTS using SIP protocol. The invention further provides an apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating a VoIP communication session by way of a radio link with a mobile station. The mobile station forms a QoS (Quality of Service) information element for communication to a radio access network portion. The QoS information element is indicating whether to remove packet header information of the data packets to be communicated upon the radio link pursuant to the communication session.

  • Patent number: 6636491
Abstract: An access point (GGSN) from a mobile communications system to an external system is selected (3) at a service node (SGSN) of the mobile communications system based on at least two or three grounds of selection: the subscription data of a mobile subscriber stored in the mobile communication system or an access point selection data given by a user in a service request (1), or on other grounds. The serving node sends to the access point (GGSN) selected a further service request (4) which includes indication of the grounds of the selection, i.e. whether the access point is selected by subscription, by a user, or based on any other grounds. Thereby the access point is able to distinguish and accept service requests in which the rights of the user are already assured by the subscription, without any security problems. When the request is based on the selection of the access point by the user, or on any other insecure grounds, the access point is able to make any further actions to ensure the security.

  • Patent number: 6633755
Abstract: The advantages of optimal routing are somewhat limited by the tariff requirements requiring that optimal routing must not cause the call to be more expensive to any of the subscribers participating in the call. If the bills of both the calling and the called subscriber are paid by the same company, for example, it is in the interest of the company to minimize the total cost of the call, i.e. the sum of the bills of subscribers A and B. In this invention a condition for bypassing the tariff requirement for direct routing is specified. The calls can be routed directly, for example, within a prespecified user group.

  • Patent number: 6628950
Abstract: In some mobile telecommunications systems reception of calls outside the home network may be very expensive for the called subscriber. For this reason, subscribers are given the possibility to bar incoming calls when roaming outside the home network. On the other hand, when using optimised routing, reception of calls even far from the home network may be very advantageous or even free. Hereby there are no longer any grounds for barring incoming calls. A method is presented in this invention where those network elements can be defined for the subscriber on a location information basis from which incoming calls will be relayed to the subscriber.
