  • Publication number: 20070184840
Abstract: A radio access network comprises a serving radio network controller (S-RNC). The S-RNC receives successfully received medium access control (MAC) packet data units (PDUs), discards duplicates of MAC PDUs, reorders the non-discarded MAC PDUs based on serial numbers of the MAC PDUs and delivers the MAC PDUs to a radio link control protocol layer. A controlling radio network controller (C-RNC) provides information to Node-Bs under its control for use in scheduling uplink transmissions. A plurality of Node-Bs schedule uplink transmissions in response to the information provided by its C-RNC, transmit scheduling information to user equipments of its cells, receive MAC PDUs from user equipments of its cells using hybrid automatic repeat request and forward the successfully received MAC PDUs to an associated S-RNC.

  • Publication number: 20070171857
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing data security and automatic repeat request (ARQ) in a wireless communication system are disclosed. Cipher entities are included in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and an access gateway (aGW), and outer ARQ, (or radio link control (RLC)), entities are included in the WTRU and an evolved Node-B (eNode-B). Each cipher entity is located on top of an outer ARQ entity. The cipher entities cipher and decipher a data block by using a generic sequence number (SN) assigned to the data block. The outer ARQ entities may segment the ciphered data block to multiple packet data units (PDUs), may concatenate multiple ciphered data blocks to a PDU, or may generate one PDU from one data block. The outer ARQ entities may segment or re-segment the PDU when a transmission failure occurs.

  • Publication number: 20070168826
Abstract: A method and system for implementing hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ)-assisted automatic repeat request (ARQ) in a wireless communication system are disclosed. When an H-ARQ negative acknowledgement (NACK)-to-positive acknowledgement (ACK) error occurs, the H-ARQ receiver sends an H-ARQ NACK-to-ACK error indicator to the H-ARQ transmitter unless a maximum retransmission limit has reached, a maximum time for delivery has expired or a lifespan of the failed packet has expired. The H-ARQ transmitter sends a local NACK to the ARQ transmitter so that the failed packet is recovered at an ARQ level. The H-ARQ receiver sends a local NACK to the ARQ receiver if the H-ARQ receiver does not receive the failed packet before certain conditions occur. The ARQ receiver may send a status report to the ARQ transmitter for recovery of the failed packet.

  • Publication number: 20070149206
Abstract: A method and system for adjusting uplink transmission timing when sending an initial transmission to a target cell/Node-B of an evolved universal terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) immediately after handover from a source cell/Node-B of the E-UTRAN. In one embodiment, a user equipment (UE) autonomously computes and applies a timing advance (TA) value based on the current source cell/Node-B timing value, cell/Node-B beacon channel reference signal measurements and knowledge of the relative time difference, (if any), between the source and target cells/Node-Bs. In another embodiment, the UE sends a scheduling request message or real data packets with the computed TA value applied to the uplink transmission timing to the E-UTRAN via pre-allocated non-contention based uplink radio resources. In an alternate embodiment, the UE sends a scheduling request message with the new computed TA value applied to the UL transmission timing to an E-UTRAN via a synchronous random access channel (RACH).

  • Publication number: 20070140261
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a transport format combination (TFC) are disclosed. A TFC recovery and elimination unit generates an allowed transport format combination set (TFCS) subset by recovering supported TFCs and eliminating not supported TFCs based on allocated radio resources and parameters that are new. A multiplexing and transmission sequence number (TSN) setting unit generates a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) by multiplexing at least one higher layer PDU within a maximum supported MAC PDU size. A TFC selection and padding unit selects a TFC for the MAC PDU from the allowed TFCS subset and performs padding of the MAC PDU, if necessary, so that the MAC PDU fits into the selected TFC. For retransmission, a new allowed TFCS subset may be generated based on new radio resources and parameters and the MAC PDU may be fragmented.

  • Publication number: 20070117563
Abstract: A method and system for call setup in an evolved third generation (3G) radio access network are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends its identity to a core network (CN) for call setup when the WTRU is in an RRC_disconnected state. The CN verifies the identity and sends an authentication vector to the WTRU. The WTRU sends a service access request message including an authentication response to the CN via a Node-B. The Node-B performs an admission control. The CN attaches the WTRU if the authentication response is same to an expected response. The Node-B then allocates radio resources to the WTRU. The Node-Bs may be directly connected, or may be connected to a control plane server which performs admission control. When the WTRU is transitioning from an RRC_idle state to an RRC_connected state, the WTRU may or may not need to re-authenticate again.

  • Publication number: 20070115871
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling transmissions via an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) are disclosed. A scheduled power is calculated for scheduled data flows. A remaining transmit power is calculated for the E-DCH transmission. A rate request message is generated, wherein the scheduled power, remaining transmit power and rate request message are used to select transport format combinations (TFCs) and multiplex data scheduled for the E-DCH transmission. The remaining transmit power is calculated by subtracting from a maximum allowed power the power of a dedicated physical data channel (DPDCH), a dedicated physical control channel (DPCCH), a high speed dedicated physical control channel (HS-DPCCH), an enhanced uplink dedicated physical control channel (E-DPCCH) and a power margin.

  • Publication number: 20070117519
Abstract: A wireless digital communication system includes a base station in communication with a plurality of user equipment mobile terminals (UEs). The system prioritizes the forwarding of blocks of downlink data to designated ones of the UEs. The system employs adaptive modulation and coding (AM&C) to achieve improved radio resource utilization and provides optimum data rates for user services. Blocks of downlink (DL) data are received by the base station which requests downlink (DL) channel quality measurements only from those mobile terminals (UEs) with pending downlink transmissions. The UEs respond to the request by measuring and reporting DL channel quality to the base station, which then allocates resources such that the UEs will make best use of radio resources. The base station notifies the UEs of the physical channel allocation indicating the modulation/coding rate and allocated slots followed by transmission of blocks of downlink data which are transmitted to the UEs.

  • Publication number: 20070086437
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling reception of multimedia broadcast/multicast services (MBMS) at a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) are disclosed. In order to control reception of an unwanted service of the MBMS, the WTRU is enabled or disabled for receiving MBMS in accordance with a user input. The unwanted service may be blocked at an application layer or at a lower layer. Either all services or a selected individual service may be blocked. The selection may be based on a type or priority of the content. The selection may be overridden for providing a certain service. To block the unwanted service, reception of an MBMS announcement message is disabled. Alternatively, an MBMS identity is prevented from being passed to a lower layer or is passed with a flag indicating that the unwanted service of the MBMS should not be processed.

  • Publication number: 20070060142
Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficient operation of an enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) are disclosed. A physical layer processing includes computation of various control parameters followed by actual processing of the data to be transmitted. In accordance with the present invention, the computation of the control parameters is performed asynchronously from the associated data operation. A medium access control (MAC) layer provides information needed for computation of the control parameters to the physical layer as early as possible, while the data is being processed in parallel. The provided data includes a hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) profile, a transport block size, power offset, or the like. By sending this data to the physical layer before MAC-e processing is complete, the latency constraint can be significantly relaxed.

  • Publication number: 20070061664
Abstract: A wireless communication method and apparatus for detecting and decoding enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) hybrid automatic repeat request (H-ARQ) indicator channel (E-HICH) transmissions are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) receives E-HICH transmissions and detects an H-ARQ indicator transmitted via the E-HICH by performing a binary hypothesis test. The WTRU then generates an acknowledgement (ACK) message or a non-acknowledgement (NACK) message based on the detected H-ARQ indicator. A reliability test may be further performed to improve performance, whereby the binary hypothesis test may be performed only if the reliability test is passed.

  • Publication number: 20070049309
Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing enhanced uplink scheduling grants are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) detects an absolute grant (AG) and a relative grant (RG). Once the WTRU detects an AG or a RG, a new serving grant (SG) is generated and a hybrid automatic repeat request process may be activated or deactivated depending on whether the received AG is a primary AG or a secondary AG, whether a scheduling mode is a primary AG mode or a secondary AG mode, whether an AG value is set to “INACTIVE” and whether a transmission time interval is 2 ms or 10 ms. A Node-B may send a secondary AG to the WTRU before switching from a primary AG mode to a secondary AG mode and may send the secondary AG only if there is no out-of-date secondary AG exists, which may be detected by implementing a time threshold.
