Patent number: 11329447Abstract: A laser system comprising two phase-locked solid-state laser sources is described. The laser system can be phase-locked at a predetermined offset between the operating frequencies of the lasers. This is achieved with high precision while exhibiting both low noise and high agility around the predetermined offset frequency. A pulse generator can be employed to generate a series of optical pulses from the laser system, the number, duration and shape of which can all be selected by a user. A phase-lock feedback loop provides a means for predetermined frequency chirps and phase shifts to be introduced throughout a sequence of generated pulses. The laser system can be made highly automated. The above features render the laser system ideally suited for use within coherent control two-state quantum systems, for example atomic interferometry, gyroscopes, precision gravimeters gravity gradiometers and quantum information processing and in particular the generation and control of quantum bits.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2018Date of Patent: May 10, 2022Assignee: M SQUARED LASERS LIMITEDInventors: Gareth Thomas Maker, Stephen Webster

Patent number: 11231636Abstract: An optical frequency mixing module is described that comprises a nonlinear medium for frequency mixing the photons of one or more input optical fields to generate an output optical field; a nonlinear medium tuner for automatically phase matching the nonlinear medium to the one or more input optical fields to select the wavelength of the output optical field generated by the nonlinear medium; and a first direction correcting optic. The position of the first direction correcting optic relative to the nonlinear medium is dependent upon the selected wavelength of the output optical field and therefore ensures that the position and angle of propagation of this field remains constant and independent of its wavelength of. The optical frequency mixing modules therefore provides a means for automatically selecting the wavelength of the output field with no deviation being imparted onto the position or angle of propagation of the output field.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2017Date of Patent: January 25, 2022Assignee: M Squared Lasers LimitedInventors: Gareth Thomas Maker, Graeme Peter Alexander Malcolm, Stephen Webster

Publication number: 20210273398Abstract: A method and system for combining two or more optical fields is disclosed. A first continuous-wave high powered output field generated by a solid-state master laser is injected into a first solid state optical amplifier to produce a single output field from the laser system that exhibits a high phase-coherence with the output field of the master laser. The power of the output field equals the sum of powers of the master laser and that generated by the first optical amplifier, while exhibiting similar beams characteristics to that produced by the output field of the master laser i.e. it exhibits low noise, in a single transverse and longitudinal mode Gaussian beam, and has a single polarisation. The laser system is highly scalable in that N optical amplifiers may be located in series with the master laser to provide a single low noise, high power output field.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2019Publication date: September 2, 2021Inventors: Graeme MALCOLM, Gareth MAKER, Stephen WEBSTER

Publication number: 20210036484Abstract: A method and system for injection-locking multiple optical amplifiers is disclosed. A master laser is employed to generate a continuous-wave output field. Optical modulators then produce first and second seed optical fields from the continuous-wave output field. The first and second seed optical fields provide an input to injection lock one or more optical amplifiers, optionally at different operating frequencies. Since the first and second seed optical fields are generated from the continuous-wave output field then the output fields of the optical amplifiers exhibit a high phase-coherence with each other and with the continuous-wave output field. Employing the first and second optical fields reduces the requirement to induce large frequency shifts on a single optical field. Techniques for phase-locking the output of the injection-locked laser systems are also provided to further reduce phase noise within the systems.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 30, 2019Publication date: February 4, 2021Inventors: Gareth Thomas MAKER, Graeme Peter Alexander MALCOLM, Stephen WEBSTER

Publication number: 20080099639Abstract: A hook and loop detachable and re-attachable pad apparatus that is applied to furniture to protect flooring surfaces and make sliding furniture easier, has a hook material on a plate that attaches to the furniture to which a separate loop pad, made of loop material, attaches. The loop pad is detachable and re-attachable and may have loop material on both sides. Alternatively, a loop plate applied with loop material may attach to the furniture and have a separate, hook and loop combination pad that attaches to it. The combination pad has one side that is hook material and one side that is loop material so that additional hook and loop combination pads may be stacked on top of the prior pad to provide a thicker cushion to account for pad compression due to heavier pieces of furniture or to slightly raise pieces of furniture to better suit a user.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2007Publication date: May 1, 2008Inventor: Stephen Webster

Publication number: 20050041734Abstract: A method of generating video data for transmission to a user particularly for use in a video surveillance system. The method comprises generating a first representation of a first image and one or more further representations of the first image are then generated, said further representation(s) being predicted from a previously generated representation of the first image. In response to a request for a subsequent image, a first representation of said subsequent image being predicted from a representation of the first image. Then one or more further representations of said subsequent image are generated, said further representations of said subsequent image being predicted from a previously generated representation of said subsequent image. Thus, the same source data for a first image is fed into the encoder, so producing a progressive still image at the decoder. When a different image is required, the encoder substitutes, as the input to the encoder, the source picture from the requested point in time.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2003Publication date: February 24, 2005Inventors: Matthew Walker, Adrian Thurlow, Stephen Webster

Patent number: 5426389Abstract: A device for restoring DC and non-zero average components of a serially transmitted binary signal which has been AC coupled. The device comprises an input port for the binary signal, a clamping circuit, a feedback network, a summing node, and an output port. The input port includes a capacitor for coupling the binary signal to the summing node and the clamping circuit. The feedback network includes an input and an output which are also connected to the summing node. The clamping circuit clamps the positive and negative peaks of the AC coupled binary signal which exceed a predetermined range. The feedback network latches the AC coupled binary signal and produces a current signal. For a binary signal which is within the predetermined range, the clamping circuit exhibits a very high input impedance, thereby causing the current signal to charge the coupling capacitor and produce a voltage which is added to the AC coupled binary signal at the summing node.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1993Date of Patent: June 20, 1995Assignee: Gennum CorporationInventor: Stephen Webster
