In certain implementations, a method for transmitting messages over a datalink communication system includes identifying a location of a first communication unit; and identifying an altitude of the first communication unit. Further, the method includes selecting a sub-network preference for the first communication unit for communicating between the first communication unit and one or more other communication units, wherein the sub-network preference is selected based on the location and the altitude of the first communication unit, wherein the sub-network preference identifies one or more sub-networks in order of preference; and transmitting one or more messages to the one or more other communication units through a sub-network that is a most preferred sub-network as indicated by the selected sub-network preference and available for communications.

In at least one embodiments, the machine readable instructions cause the processing unit to manage communications associated with the flight of an aircraft, wherein the communications are communicated through the communication device with the data center; distinguish identifying information received through the communication device, wherein the identifying information identifies at least one of the air traffic control center and associated aeronautical telecommunications network address; and establish a communication session with the air traffic control center using the identifying information received through the communication device.

The data authority function prevents the first CPDLC application from establishing a concurrent current data authority session when the second CPDLC application is the data authority application. The data authority function prevents the second CPDLC application from establishing a concurrent current data authority session when the first CPDLC application is the data authority application.

    Abstract: A method for processing Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) messages at a Communications Management Unit (CMU) on an aircraft is provided. The method includes, for an ACARS downlink message, receiving a message at the CMU from an application on a computer external to the CMU onboard the aircraft, reading a field in the message that indicates a message type for that application, determining an ACARS label associated with the message type, using the determined ACARS label instead of the industry standard ACARS label/sublabel associated with the onboard application external to the CMU, and sending the ACARS downlink message encoded with the determined ACARS label to a ground system to be delivered to a peer ground application.

The method includes monitoring a datalink router for messages from a first CPDLC application in a first one or more execution partitions, wherein the first one or more execution partitions are configured to implement a first CPDLC application and wherein messages from the first CPDLC application and a second CPDLC application in a second one or more execution partitions use the datalink router to interface with one or more radio transceivers. The method also includes when the second CPDLC application has an active current data authority (CDA) air traffic control (ATC) connection, inhibiting communication between the first CPDLC application and an ATC ground station by discarding downlink messages of the first CPDLC application from the datalink router.

    Abstract: A method of compressing messages into a message block is provided. The method includes monitoring a router queue of a first communication hub for short messages that are waiting to be transmitted to the same second communication hub. A short message is a message that contains less characters than a maximum number of characters allowed in a user data block of the message block. At least two short messages monitored in the router queue waiting to be transmitted to the same second communication hub are combined when a combined message character number is less than the maximum number of characters allowed in the user data block of the message block. The message block with the combined at least two messages is then transmitted.

    Abstract: A method for minimizing datalink message propagation time comprises determining whether a datalink TPDU ready for transmission requires an acknowledgement; transmitting the TPDU, starting a transport retry timer, and setting a transmission count to one, when acknowledgement is required; determining whether acknowledgement is received after transmitting the TPDU; determining whether the retry timer has expired if acknowledgement not received; determining whether a hold mode is in effect when the retry timer has expired; determining whether a transport inactivity timer has expired when the hold mode is in effect; determining whether the hold mode is still in effect when the inactivity timer has not expired; when the hold mode is no longer in effect, incrementing the transmission count by one; and retransmitting the datalink TPDU and restarting the retry timer, when the transmission count is less than a predetermined maximum value and the inactivity timer has not expired.

The system also includes a human machine interface (HMI) in the aircraft that is operatively connected to the processing unit. The HMI is configured to receive input from a user and display information to the user. One or more data sources that provide dynamic information are in operative communication with the processing unit. The processing unit is configured to determine whether an ATC uplink message is acceptable based on analysis of the dynamic information from the one or more data sources.

The aerospace system comprises at least one display unit configured to display flight data and a memory configured to store one or more flight plan associations. Each flight plan association is an association between a data link message and a respective waypoint in a flight plan. The aerospace system also comprises a processing unit configured to determine when each respective waypoint in the flight plan is reached based on a comparison of current location data to the flight plan. When each respective waypoint is reached, the processing unit is configured to identify any data link messages associated with the respective waypoint based on the flight plan associations and to direct the at least one display unit to display a respective notification for each identified data link message associated with the respective waypoint.
