Patent number: 6066234Abstract: A process for producing a creped sheet as well as a creping blade and creped paper product formed by such blade is set forth with the process including the steps of adhering a cellulosic web to a moving surface, providing a stepped creping blade disposed to crepe the cellulosic web from the moving surface and creping the cellulosic web from the moving surface forms a creped paper product having greater bulk and absorbency than previously prepared creped paper products.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1996Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Assignee: Fort James CorporationInventors: Peter Parker, Thomas N. Kershaw, Robert Marinack, Ranga Ramesh, Frank Harper

Patent number: 6051104Abstract: A one-ply paper tissue product and a method of making a one-ply paper product combining high strength and softness along with low sidedness. The paper tissue product exhibits a sidedness parameter of less than 0.3 preferably, less than 0.225, a tensile modulus of no more than 32 grams/percent strain, a GM MMD of no more than about 0.225, and a cross directional strength of at least 200 grams per 3 inches. In stratification tissues, these properties are obtained by control of stratification, particularly, chemical stratification and stratification of furnish when appropriate. The tissue has a sidedness parameter value of less than 0.3, preferably, about 0.15 to about less than 0.225. In homogenous tissue, these properties are obtained by adding a strength enhancing agent to separate furnish sources prior to the funish sources being combined, and further, optionally adding the softener to the nascent web.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1997Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Fort James CorporationInventors: T. Philips Oriaran, Frank D. Harper, Anthony O. Awofeso, Cristian M. Neculescu, Phuong Van Luu, Thomas N. Kershaw, Galyn A. Schulz

Patent number: 5908533Abstract: The present invention relates to biaxially undulatory single-ply and multi-ply tissues, single-ply and multi-ply towels, single-ply and multi-ply napkins and other personal care and cleaning products as well as novel creping blades and novel processes for the manufacture of such paper products. The present invention is directed to tissue and towel product having highly desirable bulk, appearance and softness characteristics produced by utilizing a novel undulatory creping blade having a multiplicity of serrulations formed in its rake surface which presents differentiated creping angles and/or rake angles to the web as it is being creped. The invention is also directed to a novel blade having an undulatory rake surface having trough-shaped serrulations in the rake surface of the blade. The undulatory creping blade has a multiplicity of alternating serrulated sections of either uniform depth or a multiplicity of arrays of serrulations having non-uniform depth.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1997Date of Patent: June 1, 1999Assignee: Fort James CorporationInventors: Robert J. Patent number: 5409572Abstract: A single or multi-ply tissue product includes at least one foam-formed ply incorporating at least about 100 ppm of forming-loop-incorporated surfactant, the ply includes from at least about 50% by weight to about 80% by weight of relatively short, high softness cellulosic fiber formed by chemical pulping of hardwood. The fibers have a weight average fiber length of between about 0.5 to about 2.2 mm, a coarseness of about 7 to about 14 mg of fiber per 100 m of fiber length (mg/100 m). The ply includes from at least about 20% by weight to about 50% by weight of relatively long strength-enhancing cellulosic fiber chosen from chemically pulped softwood fiber and chemi-thermo-mechanically pulped softwood fiber and mixtures thereof. The strength-enhancing cellulosic fiber have a weight average fiber length of about 2 to about 4 mm, a coarseness of about 14 to about 28 mg/100 m. Optionally, up to about 30% by weight of bulk-enhancing fibers having a three-dimensional anfractuous character may be provided.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1994Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: James River Corporation of VirginiaInventors: Thomas N. Patent number: 5227023Abstract: Novel multi-layer paper and tissue products are provided, which possess strength, softness and absorbency. The products comprise either at least two foam deposited paper layers, wherein the foams have different air contents therein, or foam and water deposited layers. The layers can be deposited at about identical feed pressures from a single headbox while still possessing differing tensile strength ratios. Novel processes for forming such products are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1991Date of Patent: July 13, 1993Assignee: James River Corporation of VirginiaInventors: Joseph R. Pounder, Frederick W. Ahrens, Thomas N. Kershaw

Patent number: 4533437Abstract: The invention relates to a papermaking machine employing a differential pressing felt for simultaneously dewatering the paper web and imprinting the paper web as the web is deposited onto the surface of a heated drying cylinder. The felt has a felt facing material greater than about 153 grams/m.sup.2 and imprinting yarn strands forming knuckles adjacent to the felt facing. The yarn strands have a spacing of about 6 to about 25 0.0254 meters.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1982Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: Scott Paper CompanyInventors: John F. Curran, Thomas N.
