  • Patent number: 10884931
Abstract: In a transactional memory environment including a first processor and one or more additional processors, a computer-implemented method includes identifying a memory location and sending a probe request from the first processor to the additional processors. The probe request includes the memory location. The computer implemented method further includes generating, by each additional processor, an indication including whether the memory location is in use for a transaction by the additional processor. The computer-implemented method further includes sending the indication from each additional processor to the first processor and proceeding, by the first processor, based on the indication.

  • Patent number: 10884946
Abstract: Aspects include a computer-implemented method that includes receiving an instruction at a processor to perform an operation on a memory block having an address and accessing a state indicator by the processor without altering a value of the state indicator. The state indicator is stored in a memory location independent of the memory block, and accessing includes sending a request to an operator to return the value of the state indicator to the processor. The method also includes determining based on the value of the state indicator whether the memory block is in a pre-defined state.

  • Patent number: 10838733
Abstract: A load request to restore a plurality of architected registers is obtained. Based on obtaining the load request, one or more architected registers of the plurality of architected registers are restored. The restoring uses a snapshot that maps architected registers to physical registers to replace one or more physical registers currently assigned to the one or more architected registers with one or more physical registers of the snapshot corresponding to the one or more architected registers.

  • Patent number: 10831476
Abstract: A delay facility is provided in which program execution may be delayed until a predefined event occurs, such as a comparison of memory locations results in a true condition, a timeout is reached, an interruption is made pending or another condition exists. The delay facility includes one or more compare and delay machine instructions used to delay execution. The one or more compare and delay instructions may include a 32-bit compare and delay (CAD) instruction and a 64-bit compare and delay (CADG) instruction.

  • Patent number: 10782979
Abstract: A reload multiple instruction is used to restore a set of architected registers saved by a spill multiple instruction. The reload multiple instruction is executed, and the executing includes determining the set of architected registers to be restored, which is specified by the reload multiple instruction. The set of architected registers is restored from a selected snapshot that maps architected registers to physical registers. The restoring replaces one or more physical registers currently assigned to one or more architected registers of the set of architected registers with one or more physical registers of the selected snapshot corresponding to the set of architected registers.

  • Patent number: 10732858
Abstract: A guarded storage facility sets up a boundary indicating a range of addresses to be guarded or protected. When a program attempts to access an address in a guarded section defined by the boundary, a guarded storage event occurs. Use of this facility facilitates performance of certain tasks within a computing environment, including storage reclamation.

  • Patent number: 10719415
Abstract: Task specific diagnostic controls are provided to facilitate the debugging of certain types of abort conditions. The diagnostic controls may be set to cause transactions to be selectively aborted, allowing a transaction to drive its abort handler routine for testing purposes. The controls include, for instance, a transaction diagnostic scope and a transaction diagnostic control. The transaction diagnostic scope indicates when the transaction diagnostic control is to be applied, and the transaction diagnostic control indicates whether transactions are to selectively aborted.

  • Patent number: 10713048
Abstract: An instruction to perform a conditional branch to an indirectly specified location is executed. A branch address is obtained from a location in memory, the location in memory designated by the instruction. A determination is made, based on a condition code of another instruction, whether a branch is to occur, and a branch to the branch address is performed, based on determining the branch is to occur.

  • Patent number: 10684863
Abstract: Restricted instructions are prohibited from execution within a transaction. There are classes of instructions that are restricted regardless of type of transaction: constrained or nonconstrained. There are instructions only restricted in constrained transactions, and there are instructions that are selectively restricted for given transactions based on controls specified on instructions used to initiate the transactions.

  • Patent number: 10671390
Abstract: A conditional instruction end facility is provided that allows completion of an instruction to be delayed. In executing the machine instruction, an operand is obtained, and a determination is made as to whether the operand has a predetermined relationship with respect to a value. Based on determining that the operand does not have the predetermined relationship with respect to the value, the obtaining and the determining are repeated. Based on determining that the operand has the predetermined relationship with respect to the value, execution of the instruction is completed.

  • Patent number: 10656950
Abstract: A Spin Loop Delay instruction. The instruction has a field associated therewith that indicates one or more conditions to be checked. Dispatching of the instruction is initially delayed. The instruction is subsequently dispatched based on a timeout, provided the instruction has not been previously dispatched based on meeting at least one condition of the one or more conditions to be checked.

  • Patent number: 10656945
Abstract: Executing a Next Instruction Access Intent instruction by a computer. The processor obtains an access intent instruction indicating an access intent. The access intent is associated with an operand of a next sequential instruction. The access intent indicates usage of the operand by one or more instructions subsequent to the next sequential instruction. The computer executes the access intent instruction. The computer obtains the next sequential instruction. The computer executes the next sequential instruction, whose execution comprises, based on the access intent, adjusting one or more cache behaviors for the operand of the next sequential instruction.

  • Patent number: 10649785
Abstract: One or more architected registers are restored from a snapshot previously taken of the one or more architected registers. The snapshot indicates one or more physical registers previously assigned to the one or more architected registers. The restoring replaces the one or more physical registers currently assigned to the one or more architected registers with the one or more physical registers previously assigned to the one or more architected registers as indicated by the snapshot. A determination is made as to the validity of the one or more architected registers restored using the snapshot. The determining validity includes checking memory locations associated with the one or more architected registers to determine whether contents of the one or more architected registers have changed since the snapshot was taken. If the contents of the one or more architected registers have not changed, the one or more architected registers are valid.

  • Publication number: 20200125367
Abstract: Sharing snapshots between restoration and recovery. A snapshot to be used for recovery and restoration is obtained. The snapshot includes restoration state for a plurality of architected registers. The plurality of architected registers includes one or more architected registers associated with an instruction to alter an execution path and one or more architected registers associated with a save request. At least one architected register of the plurality of architected registers is restored, based on a request. The request is a recovery request to recover at least one architected register associated with the instruction to alter the execution path or a restoration request to restore at least one architected register associated with the save request.
