  • Patent number: 9301192
Abstract: A method an apparatus for sending data to a User Equipment via a Radio Access Network node using the Transmission Control Protocol. A TCP node that sends TCP User Plane data to the UE receives a message originating from the RAN node. The message includes a congestion avoidance inhibitor relating to the UE. If the TCP node subsequently detects packet loss is detected between the TCP node and the UE, and the congestion avoidance inhibitor is present, then the TCP node will inhibit a congestion avoidance mechanism. This ensures that congestion avoidance mechanisms, which reduce transmission rate, are not initiated for temporary RAN events such as handover when there is no congestion in the network.

  • Publication number: 20160069984
Abstract: A method enables automatic determination that an area covered by an Access Point (AP) of a Wi-Fi Radio Access Network (RAN) overlaps with a cell of a 3GPP RAN. The method comprises, at an entity of the Wi-Fi RAN, obtaining a 3GPP identifier related to a user terminal that is attached to the Wi-Fi RAN and an identifier for an AP of the Wi-Fi RAN to which the terminal is attached. The method further comprises, at the entity, generating and sending a Location Service Request including the 3GPP identifier to a Location Services (LCS) Server associated with the 3GPP RAN, receiving a Location Service Response from the LCS Server that includes information identifying a cell of the 3GPP RAN in which the user terminal is located, and causing storage of an association between the identified Wi-Fi AP and the identified 3GPP cell.

  • Patent number: 9264416
Abstract: A fixed wireless terminal (FWT) (12) identifies a request from a mobile radio user equipment (UE) (38) for a circuit-switched mobile telephony, service provided by a circuit-switched mobile core network (32). In response to the request, the FWT provides an internet protocol (IP) connection between the mobile UE and a generic access network controller (44) via a packet-switched (PS) mobile network (42) that includes a radio base station. The IP connection and the generic access network controller provide the mobile UE access to the circuit-switched mobile telephony service provided by the circuit-switched mobile core network.

  • Patent number: 9264982
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a network node for selecting a gateway for a user equipment in a communications system. The communications system comprises the network node and one or more gateways, configured to provide packet data network connectivity to the user equipment. The network node detects (401) the presence of local gateways among said gateways and obtains (403) a first set of information indicating the type of the user equipment. Based on the first set of information, the network node selects (406) one of the detected local gateways to provide packet data network connectivity to the user equipment when the user equipment type is of a fixed type.

  • Patent number: 9258751
Abstract: Method and arrangement in a network control node, for performing access control of a mobile node in a handover from a source cell to a target subscriber group cell. The method comprises obtaining a network based allowed subscriber group list, receiving a target subscriber group identification, checking if the target subscriber group identification is comprised in the obtained network based allowed subscriber group list. If it is, information from a target network control node is obtained, verifying that the received subscriber group identification corresponds to the target subscriber group cell. Still further, the method comprises granting the mobile node access to the target subscriber group cell. Also, a method and arrangement in a target network control node, for assisting a network control node in performing access control for a mobile node in a handover from a source cell to a target subscriber group cell is provided.

  • Patent number: 9241232
Abstract: A method, a Network Node and a machine is provided, wherein the machine initially is not provided with an identity which is valid for communication with the communication network. According to the method, the network receives an Activation Request (140, 352, 452, 552, 652) from a User Equipment (320, 420, 520, 620), which User Equipment has an identity which is valid in the communication network and which User Equipment is authenticated in the communication network, the Activation Request comprising a machine identity for the machine. An identity which is valid in said communication network for said machine is obtained (160, 354, 454, 555, 655) on the basis of the Activation Request being received from a User Equipment having a valid identity and being authenticated in the communication network. The obtained identity is transmitted (170, 360, 461, 564, 662) to the machine for enabling the machine to subsequently authenticate itself in one or more communication networks using the obtained identity.

  • Patent number: 9226130
Abstract: Mobility history relating to a plurality of cells visited by the user equipment (130) is obtained (210) from the first radio network node (120), Next, mobility control information (120) is generated (220) based on the mobility history. Further, the mobility control information is provided (240, 245) to the radio communication system (100), Moreover, a first radio network node (120) for enabling a network node (110, 150, 160, 170, 180) to generate mobility control information to be used by the radio network node (120) for managing signalling and processing due to mobility events in a radio communication system (100) is provided. The first radio network node (120) collects (260) mobility history relating to a user equipment connected to the first radio network node (120). The first radio network node (120) sends (210) the mobility history to the network node (110), and receives (240) from the network node (110) mobility control information associated with the first radio network node (120).

  • Publication number: 20150365875
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a radio access network cell for connecting to a communications network. A client device that is connected to a Wi-Fi access network cell sends a request message to a node in the Wi-Fi access network cell. It receives a response from the node that includes information identifying at least one overlapping radio access network cell and a property of the overlapping radio access network cell. On the basis of a comparison between the property of the radio access network cell and a corresponding property of the Wi-Fi access network cell, the node determines whether to remain connected to the Wi-Fi access network cell or to move to the radio access network cell. This has the advantage that a client device that is already associated with a Wi-Fi AP can determine if another access network cell could provide it with a better service, for example if the conditions of the AP change dynamically.

  • Publication number: 20150365864
Abstract: A method and node for determining whether to allow access of a mobile terminal to a WiFi access network cell is provided. The node determines a property of the WiFi access network and determines a corresponding property of a further radio access network, such as a 3GPP radio access network. On the basis of the WiFi property and the corresponding further radio access network property, the node determines whether to allow access of the mobile terminal to the WiFi access network cell. This ensures that the mobile terminal can connect to an access network that is best able to serve it. In one embodiment the node is located in the further radio access network and thus receives the WiFi property from the WiFi access network cell to make a decision. The node may be an eNodeB, a RNC or a home base station. In another embodiment the node is located in the WiFi access network and thus receives the further radio access network property from the further radio access network to make a decision.

  • Patent number: 9179377
Abstract: The invention relates to handover of a mobile station (12) from a source cell to a target cell when the identity of the target cell in a wireless communication network (10, 11) is ambiguous, a source base station (14) defining the source cell receives an event from the mobile station comprising a cell identifier, investigates if there are more cells in the neighborhood sharing the same cell identifier and sends a handover instruction to the mobile station comprising an identity ambiguity indicator if there are more cells sharing the same cell identifier. The mobile station autonomously initiates establishment of a connection to a target base station defining the target cell based on the identity ambiguity indicator in order to effect handover.

  • Publication number: 20150289233
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sending Network Aware data between a node in a radio network and a node in a service network. A first node generates a Protocol Data Unit, the Protocol Data Unit comprising Network Aware data. The Protocol Data Unit is then sent towards a second node using a transport bearer. This has the advantage that the second node is made aware of the Network Aware data and can, if necessary, adjust its behaviour accordingly.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling data between a radio network and a service network, the data comprising Network Aware data. A gateway node in a mobile core network receives a message from the radio network. It then determines whether the message comprises Network Aware data. If it does, then the message is routed to a Packet Data Network Gateway node configured to handle Network Aware data. If it doesn't, then the message is routed to a Packet Data Network Gateway node for message handling. This ensures that non-Network Aware data is handled using regular message handling, and Network Aware data is handled by nodes configured to handle Network Aware data.
