Patent number: 6937430Abstract: Friction existing between any two surfaces having relative motion is nonlinear, multiform, and is difficult to model. Nonlinear friction in the actuator pivot of a hard disk drive (HDD) limits the low frequency gain, which prevents the system positioning accuracy from further improvement. This problem is much more pronounced for the severe nonlinearity at the micrometer level. The conventional two-mode proximate time optimal servomechanism (PTOS) is inadequate for immediate future hard disk drives because of the existence of restrictions in the particular design approach. A triple-mode control scheme, and its variations, as presented herein, include (a) a proximate time-optimal controller (PTOC) having a relatively large output is used for track seeking, (b) a robust compensator having a relatively small output is used for track following to compensate for friction and other nonlinearities, and (c) a bridging (connection) control to guarantee the continuity of the control signals.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2001Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: National University of SingaporeInventors: Shuzhi Ge, Yaolong Lou, Tong Heng Lee, Chun-Hung Tony Huang, Teck Seng Low

Patent number: 6683887Abstract: An asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) downstream high speed cell bus interface protocol allows ADSL cell packets to be transmitted downstream from an ADSL bank control unit (ABCU) to a plurality of ADSL line units at a high rate of downstream throughput with flexible and efficient allocation of bandwidths and reduced error probability. The frame boundaries of an ADSL frame are derived from a conventional subscriber bus interface (SBI) frame for carrying conventional narrowband plain old telephone service (POTS) traffic, thereby allowing the ABCU and the ADSL line units to be implemented in existing channel banks with standard channel bank backplane traces.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1999Date of Patent: January 27, 2004Assignee: Alcatel USA Sourcing, L.P.Inventors: Tony Huang, Prakash Appanna, Jensheng Lee, Hamid Baradaran, Hans Christian Mogensen, James Lotz, Tom Kwang-Tsai Koai, Osama Bahgat

Patent number: 6643285Abstract: A packet switch has a switching unit (SU) for switching packets between network links and a computing unit (CU) connected to the SU through a network link for implementing software control functions over the SU. The SU is formed of different functional components interconnected by generic buses. The components communicate with one another using program data units (PDUs) that are formatted and transmitted according to a shared device protocol. The communication between the components occurs by placing PDUs in bus frames that are passed from component to component. Information is exchanged between the components by adding information to or dropping information from the fields of the PDUs, or by concatenating new fields to the PDUs, as the frames pass from component to component. By using a generic bus to implement PDU-based interconnections within the SU, all the components are forced to support a common interface.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1998Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: John Edward Vincent, George F. Publication number: 20030151890Abstract: A protective sheath (1) for a personal digital assistant (3) includes a lower cover (13) and an upper cover (11). The upper cover includes a window (111) made of transparent plastic material, and two side wings (112) made of elastomer. The window includes a plastic base (114), and a coating including silicon oxide (113) on a surface of the base. Adherence between the base and the coating is very firm. The window is highly transparent, and has a very smooth and even surface, and has excellent wear-resistance. A method for forming the protective sheath includes the steps of: (1) injection molding the plastic base; (2) pre-treating the base; and (3) putting the base into a vacuum chamber for plasma chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) treatment, whereby the coating including silicon oxide is formed on the surface of the base.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2002Publication date: August 14, 2003Inventors: Tony Huang, John Huang, JianLi Ma, MeiLin Wang

Patent number: 6603768Abstract: Systems and methods for assisting multiple protocol conversion in a network accelerator. A network device includes a transmit processing engine, a receive processing engine and one or more memories, each memory including one or more buffers for storing packets. When a packet is received, the receive engine adds a 4, 8, 12 or 16-byte tag to the front of the packet on a per-VC basis and stores the packet to a buffer. Additionally, the receive engine is able to add an offset to the starting address of the packet in the buffer relative to the beginning of the buffer. When a packet is to be transmitted, the transmit engine is able to transmit the packet from an address that is offset from the starting address of the buffer by one or more bytes. Additionally, the transmit engine is able to add one of several predefined packet headers on a per-packet basis.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1999Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Ryszard Bleszynski, Simon Chong, David A.
