    Abstract: An electrode for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, provided with a collector and a positive electrode active material layer arranged on the collector and contains a positive electrode active material. The positive electrode active material contains compound particles which have a layered structure composed of two or more transition metals, and which have an average particle diameter DSEM of from 1 ?m to 7 ?m (inclusive) based on the observation with an electron microscope, a ratio of the 50% particle diameter D50 in a volume-based cumulative particle size distribution to the average particle diameter DSEM, namely D50/DSEM of from 1 to 4 (inclusive), and a ratio of the 90% particle diameter D90 in the volume-based cumulative particle size distribution to the 10% particle diameter D10 in the volume-based cumulative particle size distribution, namely D90/D10 of 4 or less. The positive electrode active material layer has a void fraction of 10-45%.

    Abstract: The methods for sample preparation disclosed herein utilize an air phase to reduce aqueous phase associated with magnetic particles bound to nucleic acids to decrease carryover of one or more contaminants, such as, cell debris, chaotropic agents, non-specifically attached molecules, and the like. This air-transfer step is improved by using a combination of a first population of magnetic particles and a second population of magnetic particles, where the first population of magnetic particles is capable of associating with nucleic acids, and the magnetic particles in the second population are at least two-times larger in size than the size of the magnetic particles in the first population. As discussed herein, the use of this second population of magnetic particles improves the transfer of the first population of magnetic particles by reducing loss of the first magnetic particles during the transfer. The sample preparation methods may be semi-automated or completely automated.

The start controller includes a stop position sensor that detects a position of a piston in each cylinder at an engine stop time, an intake pressure sensor that detects an intake pressure in an intake passage, and a processor that determines whether the position of the piston in each of the cylinders detected by the stop position sensor is within a specified target range after the engine is stopped. In the case where it is determined that the position of the piston in each of the cylinders after the engine stop is out of the target range and the intake pressure detected by the intake pressure sensor is lower than an atmospheric pressure, the engine is started by a motor even when an engine start condition is not satisfied.
