  • Patent number: 5406817
Abstract: A rolling mill has a work roll and a back-up roll for supporting the work roll vertically and driving it. A plurality of horizontal support rollers contact the work roll at barrel diameter outside the rolling region and at a both horizontal sides of the work roll and act to fix the position of the work roll in both horizontal directions during rolling and to oppose horizontal rolling forces. In order to reduce the bending of the work roll during rolling, there are provided means for applying horizontal counterbending forces to the work roll comprising members e.g. rollers, contacting the work roll at locations axially further from the rolling region than the support rollers and actuator means for urging the members against the work roll. The counterbending forces being in the same direction as the net horizontal force applied to said work roll by said back-up roll and the material being rolled.

  • Patent number: 5365764
Abstract: In a rolling mill comprising upper and lower work rolls crossed each other to perform strip crown control, a straight line connecting the center of an operation side screwdown screw and the center of a drive side screwdown screw is inclined relative to a line perpendicular to the rolling direction. A cross angle .theta. to be controlled is changed in opposite plus and minus directions about the straight line connecting both the screwdown centers. A large extent of strip crown control can be achieved with a smaller cross deviation than usual in the prior art, thereby permitting omission of an equalizer beam. Further, change in the extent by which strip crown is varied upon control with respect to the cross angle becomes substantially linear and hence control is more easily conducted. Since the cross angle 2.theta. between the two work rolls is larger than 2.degree., the transition temperature is not changed and uniformity in quality can be ensured.

  • Patent number: 5239851
Abstract: A five-high rolling mill is disclosed which includes an upper work roll backed by an intermediate roll and a backup roll and a lower work roll backed up by a single backup roll. Control benders are provided on each of the intermediate roll and the upper and lower work rolls. In order to optimize the control of the rolling operation for skinpass rolling and the like, the control benders for the upper work roll and the intermediate backup roll are controlled so as to effect a control of the crown sheet over the entire width of the material being rolled, while the control bender for the lower work roll controls the sheet crown of the rolled material at the lateral side end portions, resulting in a composite control substantially improving the sheet quality and preventing edge wrinkles in the material being rolled. In the disclosure embodiments, the intermediate roll has a larger drum length than a predetermined maximum sheet width of rolled material to be rolled by the work roll.

  • Patent number: 5234154
Abstract: A trailing end of a preceding bar is arranged slantingly by an angle .theta. relative to a succeeding bar such that the lower edge of the leading end face of the succeeding bar is vertically shifted from the lower edge of the trailing end face of the preceding bar with the leading end face of the succeeding bar abutting against the trailing end face of the preceding bar. After that, the succeeding bar is vertically depressed by applying a predetermined force. Since the trailing end face is inclined by .theta. relative to the leading end face, the depression causes a relative slide between surfaces of both the end faces and, at the same time, a pressure P is also produced by the wedge effect, the pressure P causing a compression force and a plastic deformation between both the end faces.

  • Patent number: 4918965
Abstract: A multi-high rolling mill has upper and lower work rolls, upper and lower backup rolls, and an intermediate roll disposed therebetween. All of the work rolls, backup rolls and intermediate roll are arranged in a perpendicular direction. The intermediate rollers support the work rolls in the direction of a path of the work, and the support rollers support intermediate rollers. Each of the support rollers has a plurality of divisional rollers arranged in the axial direction of the support roller so that the axes of the divisional rollers are spaced from one another in the vertical direction. In other words, the divisional rollers are staggered alternately in the axial direction of the support roller. A space can be secured between each support roller and associated backup roll, to support the associated work roll in the substantially perpendicular direction. The support roller, backup roll, and intermediate roll do not contact each other. This enables the diameter of the work rolls to be minimized.
