  • Publication number: 20120038113
Abstract: A seal backup ring is provided with undulating surfaces which create circumferential convergence with a relatively rotatable surface. The backup ring is configured so that differential pressure acting across a rotary seal forces portions of the backup ring against the relatively rotatable surface, closing, or substantially closing, the extrusion gap that the rotary seal is exposed to. In response to relative rotation between the backup ring and the mating relatively rotatable surface, the circumferential convergence promotes hydrodynamic lubrication within the dynamic interface that exists between the backup ring and the relatively rotatable surface. The modulus of elasticity of the backup ring is greater than the modulus of elasticity of the rotary seal.

  • Publication number: 20070111778
Abstract: The present invention allows gaming devices to set or modify game parameters through the use of random events such as spinning slot machine reels or random number generators. In some embodiments, game parameters may be established with various initial values, and then, by spinning the gaming devices' reels, for example, random reel values lining up on the payline may be used as new game parameter values. Parameter values may be used to control or initialize almost any aspect of the gaming device play experience, ranging from the types of symbols seen on the reels, to the appearance or behavior of game characters, to the rate at which “complementary” points are awarded.

  • Publication number: 20070004505
Abstract: A method is disclosed for providing entry into a bonus game at a gaming device, where the bonus games may occur at predictable times and may payout predictable amounts. In one or more embodiments, a gaming device may provide a guaranteed entry into a bonus game every hour on the hour, so long as a player meets one or more criteria. Criteria may include a total amount wagered, a total number of handle pulls completed, or a total amount of time spent at a gaming device. One or more embodiments provide a method for withholding value from a player in order that the value may delivered later in the form of a guaranteed entry into a bonus game. One or more embodiments provide a method whereby multiple gaming devices may provide entry in bonus rounds simultaneously, thereby creating mutually reinforcing sounds and visual displays.

  • Publication number: 20060172789
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention comprises a method including steps of populating a primary set of card positions with a first set of initial cards, determining at least one discarded card from the first set of initial cards, replacing the at least one discarded card from the first set of initial cards with replacement cards to form a final set of cards, and determining whether to include the at least one discarded card in at least one secondary set of card positions. If the at least one discarded card is to be included in the at least one secondary set of card positions, the method further provides for populating the at least one secondary set of card positions with the at least one discarded card. Some embodiments of the present invention also provide for determining a payout based on at least the final set of cards.

  • Publication number: 20060170669
Abstract: The invention provides a digital picture frame that allows a user to edit a displayed picture using simple and intuitive controls. Modifications to an image may be stored by the digital picture frame so that the digital picture frame may later display the edited or modified version of the picture rather than the original version. A user may edit a picture using mechanical controls (e.g., knobs, switches, slider-bars, wheels), sensors (e.g., a position sensor, a tilt sensor, a microphone, a light sensor), a voice recognition module, and/or a touch screen. A digital picture frame may identify a user and based on the user's identity (e.g., the user's preferences or permissions), may display pictures to the user. Further, different users may modify a picture in different ways, so that two different users may view two different versions of the same picture.

  • Publication number: 20050288785
Abstract: A multi-piece intraocular lens (IOL) has an optic constructed of an elastomeric plastic and an opposing pair of attachment members (haptics) constructed of a rigid plastic material. The optic or haptics have one or more small, tear drop-shaped, inlet recesses formed into each from a peripheral edge region. The haptics or optic are formed having peripheral edge protuberances matching in size, shape and position corresponding optic or haptic inlet recesses. The protuberances dovetail into the corresponding inlet recesses and are cemented therein to lock the haptics and optic together. Methods for manufacturing a multi-piece IOL include forming the haptics from a modified haptic blank and the optic from a modified optic blank. After the haptic or optic protuberances are dovetailed and cemented into the optic or haptic inlet recesses, the haptics and optic are milled or lathed from the respective haptic and optic blanks to provide a completed multi-piece IOL.

  • Publication number: 20050198061
Abstract: In a method according to an embodiment of the invention, it is determined whether there is an attempt by a device to access data representing music. If there is such an attempt by the device one of various actions may be performed, such as providing an offer to purchase an item. Determining whether there is such an attempt by the device may include reading data and determining whether the read data includes data representing music.

  • Patent number: 5807419
Abstract: An apparatus for shaping and transferring of a glass article is provided for a glassware forming machine in order to shape a glass parison in a blowing mold and to transfer the shaped glass article from the blowing mold to a deadplate in front of the machine. A blow nozzle, a blow head, and a take-out mechanism are coupled in a housing to form, cool, and grip the article. The blow nozzle is provided to blow air for the forming of the article and to cool the article once that article has been shaped. The blow head is provided to form a pressure chamber when the blow head is positioned on the blowing mold during the shaping of the glass article, the blow nozzle passing within and through the blow head. The take-out mechanism for gripping the glass article is pivotally mounted in an external part of the housing for movement between a gripping position to grip the glass article after the article has been shaped in the blowing mold and a retracted position to release the article.

  • Patent number: 5637128
Abstract: A gob distributor for glassware forming machines which include at least one curved distribution scoop mounted on a vertical turning shaft, for each one of the gobs which are simultaneously fed by a feeder. A housing which having at least one gear which turns on its axial axis, together with a central shaft, coupled at the housing and, which is coupled in coincidence with the vertical shaft of each one of the distribution scoops. A rack coupled in coincidence with the gears of each one of the distribution scoops to move said gears with a rotational movement and thus, provide a simultaneous and synchronized turn to each one of the scoops. A rotatory driver member coupled to the rack, in order to permit a forward and backward movement of the rack and thus be able to effect the rotational movement of the gears.

  • Patent number: 4774321
Abstract: A novel 100 kDa protein from Drosophila melanogaster (dp100) that recognizes both mammalian epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin and insulin-related growth factors, and crossreacts with antisera against the human EGF receptor. The binding spectrum and relative binding affinities of dp100 for growth factors and hormones, related and unrelated to EGF or insulin, demonstrate that dp100 binds to insulin-like and EGF-like factors with dissociation constants ranging from 10.sup.31 6 M to 10.sup.-9 M. Dp100 binds to human synthetic transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) and insulin-like growth factor-II with the highest affinity and, unlike the mammalian EGF receptor, has the unique ability to differentiate between EGF and TGF-alpha with a difference in affinity of three orders of magnitude. Further, dp100 is able to differentiate on the basis of binding affinity between native TGF-alpha, TGF-alpha that has been synthesized chemically and TGF-alpha that has been produced in E.
